A lot of the screws that you need are hidden. You have to know how to
open it up. Sometimes critical panels "snap" off and are not held by
any fasteners that require tools, but if you think a panel is a snap
panel and it's not, you break something. And there are a lot of screws
under things ... under keyboards, under hard drives, under batteries,
under rubber feet, under labels. The best way, by far, is with the
service manual, then there's no guessing. But once you have taken apart
about 100 laptops, you get to a point where you probably CAN figure it
out correctly even without the service manual. Getting to that point is
just experience, for which there is no shortcut.

This is all useful information, thank you very much. I guess I'm a bit
skittish because the few times that I've had to look at a laptop, I didn't
always see where the screws were, and I wasn't about to start prying
(literally) around with things that looked like they might not be
re-assemble-able.
Thank you, again.

Hi Liz,
Our standard practice is very different. When we receive a laptop for repair the first thing we do it remove the harddrive connect it to a diagnostic workstation and run the hdd manufacturers diagnostic softwareto fully test the drive, in addition we scan for viruses, trojans, file allocation errors and master boot record issues. While these tests are running, we place hdd with diagnostic programs in the laptop to test the all of the hardware and memory. Where the cost of repairs is greater than the value of the laptop we issue a BER (Beyond Economic Repair). If the problem lies with the hdd we will endeavour to retrieve as much data from the disk as possible. So you wish to contact us you can email us at pc(DOT)gp@ntlworld.com

Several months ago Dell sent me a new mobo for my D600, and a link to
step-by-step replacement instructions. I was surprised they did this
under warranty, but when it was offered I wasn't about to miss the
chance to take this beast apart (I'm typing on it now). I suspect all
the manufacturers have dissassembly steps online somewhere, and so far
I've collected two. The Dell motherlode starts here:
http://support.dell.com/support/systemsinfo/documentation.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~cat=12&~subcat=87
The IBM/Lenovo support starts here:
http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/pc/
There is also some pretty good laptop HD replacement stuff here:
http://www.cmsproducts.com/notebook_drive_removal.htm
If anyone can share the links to similar sites for the other major
brands, we all could use those links.
