Hi everyone
I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a
good website or manual that could help me with laptop repairs. I am
very used to working on all types of desktops but I have very little
experience with laptops and find that they unnerve me a bit. Before I
start undoing screws and poking around I would like to have a little
more knowledge about the ins and outs or laptop repairs since every
case and machine seems different. I would just like to be able to
replace hard drives, floppies etc for customers instead of passing
them onto someone else. Could anyone point me in the direction of a
resource that would allow me to get a basic background in working on
laptops.
thank you kindly

If you find one let me know. The problem is that every company is |
completely independent. No two machines are alike even in the same product
family. For instance have two IBM 560E laptops that have different
monitors. There is no difference in the model but when I moved the HD from
one to the other Win98 found a bunch of new hardware.
I've found that I do best specializing in IBM machines because I can get
them on Ebay pretty cheap. Also I mostly mess with them for myself not for
customers. I started by just undoing screws until I could get the base off
and went on from there.
Most of the time the HD is pretty easy to get to but some of them you have
to completely remove the base. There are some IBM laptops that open when
you pull the latches a little further than you do to just open them.
I wish I could give you more help but with laptops, unless you go to school
with a particular manufacturer you just have to get your hands in there and
take them apart.
One thing you can do is buy a couple of the same model on Ebay and try
putting them together to make a running system. I do a new one about every
two or three months.

Every laptop is different.
See what kind of manuals you can google or acquire from the
manufacturer's website.

My company paid for a course from Dell (dcse.dell.com) that has allowed me
to quickly learn how to service Toshibas and IBMs that we have in the
office. The hardest part to learn is getting the case open after that its
all the same.

Sounds like I am not the only one getting confused by the thousands of
different cases. Thanks for the link to the repair manual. I will
order it and see if it helps.
thanks for your help

I am certified on most anything out there. Toshiba's are not worth
repairing.

Really? Why do you say that? |
I ask, because I have quite a few family members that own Toshiba Laptops.
At purchase time the laptops were (or appeared to be) top of the line and
provided the best quality when running software like AutoCAD, Doom3, Quake4,
etc.

I agree. I own a Toshiba laptop (in fact I own over a dozen of them if
I include my "resale inventory"), ranging from late 1990's models to one
I just bought 2 weeks ago (an A105). And I repair them and resell them.
I think that they are fine laptops. Some are better than others, of
course, but overall I think it's still one of the top brands.

I'm surprised at that opinion too. I've had nothing but good luck
with them. Now to me, Gateway laptops seem kinda crappy. More
useless platic trim to get in the way of everything, and an overall
"not solid" feel.
But I guess everybody has favorites. |

I had a Toshiba, but it seems that a TSA agent decided he/she would
rather keep it when I traveled through the BWI (Baltimore/Washington)
Airport. In fact, my entire case that included the laptop, wireless
travel printer and numerous other techy items never made it to my
destination. But that aside, the laptop was great! I just hope the
person who has it now is enjoying it as much as I did. It's too bad
it didn't have a defective battery that would explode in their lap.

Gateways (both laptop and desktop) aren't "kind of crappy" they just plain
are IMHO. I havn't worked on any of the most recent models but the older
(over a year) models were garbage!

The very first time?! I just started removing screws and laying them out in |
the order removed. With my Sony Vaio, the keyboard and pad come off first.
This gives me access to pretty much everything.

First, you learn it largely by doing it. And yes, you will damage
laptops early in the process, so get some cheap used laptops to
experiment on.
Second, I don't like to work on a laptop without the service manual.
You need that PLUS experience/training, but there is a lot of risk if
you don't have the service manual (it's amazingly easy to ruin a laptop,
or in some cases to get it apart (even without ruining it) and not be
able to get it back together).
Parts are a problem but a google search helps you find sources. If you
do a lot of work on specific makes and models (I do a lot of work on
Toshiba laptops), you can build up a "bone pile" of dead laptops that
still have lots of good parts in them. E-Bay is a good source if you
know what you are buying.
