Hi,
I am a undergrad student of comp science and my GPA
sucks, 2.5. yeah i know it sucks.
How imp is gpa in getting me a job. I got 3 yrs of
experience in asp.net and C# and iam ranked top 100 poster
on asp.net forums. Written articles that were published on
asp.net. In other words I am .net GEEK. The reason of my
bad GPA is I was never interested in the courses tought in
uni and most of the time only did .NET programming which I
love the most.

I have to tell you the truth, it's very important for the first few
years after you graduate.
After you've proven yourself in the field it's a little less important.

I think if your website is any indicator of your abilities, you'd better
crank up that GPA.

People don't normally list GPA on their resume. Just stick with your
university long enough to get your 4 year degree, becuase that's what gets
you the interview.

Well not extremely important. A few places will pass you over, but when I
first started interviewing almost nobody every asked me about
grades/classes/etc. With luck you can literally land a very good
development job without being bothered about your GPA. Also, promote your
Major GPA if its any good (or if you can improve it). After your first job
you pretty much will never have to divulge grades. In IT your real
demonstrable abilites and experience are your most important asset -- not
whether or not you snoozed through some useless college physics class.
Having said all that... wake up man! Unless you are killing yourself having
to work 60 hours a week, getting A's in most college classes is more or less
just a matter of:
A. Show up!
B. Do the work!
C. Turn it in!
Very simple formula with amazing results. While the classes may not seem
very interesting to you, the plan of attack I just outlined really entails
only one skill that employers value: self discipline. And you WILL need
that in your career, in addition to whatever .NET minutia you care to learn.
No reason to take a chance on making things harder on yourself than they
otherwise have to be in this tough IT job market.

I don't think this is still valid today. Jobs are tight right now, and
GPA is a big factor to help distinguish applicants from each other. Of
course, this is assuming we're talking about an entry level job and the
applicants don't have any serious work experience.
Many times the HR department won't even forward resumes to the techies
unless they have a 3.0 or higher.
Of course it depends on the company, but I know my company got flooded
with applicants the last time we hired someone. We had to be ruthless
in filtering out resumes up front because we couldn't possibly
interview everyone.
By the way, the best things you can do to help your cause is to be
willing to relocate at your expense, and be willing to start
immediately. And you need to attend all of the local .NET user group
meetings because sometimes headhunters show up there to look for
people. One time a headhunter was willing to hire almost anyone with
VB.NET experience, but they had to be willing to start work immediately.

I agree, I have never seen GPAs listed on resumes. Either you are a BS,
MS or Phd or not.
This joke was told to me by a friend while discussing exam scores:
What do you call the medical student that graduated last in his class?
Answer: Doctor
Good luck!

Surely showing your skills on a .Net site would be more
beneficial?

Actually, you might want to refer to a Bachelor of Science as a BSc. BS has
some unfortunate connotations. |

Hi Azam!
I just wanted to greet you, I see you are a Cougar, you made me
remember, I was an exchange student over there in 2002. About your GPA, a
little tip, it may suck, but if you still have, lets say a semester, two or
three; then you have to do real good during that time, and try to take
classes very related to what you want to do once you graduate, having for
example an A+ and a recommendation from a respected professor teaching
something related to C# can be more important that a 4.0 GPA, also try to
join student associations, I atteded Bauer so I became a member of Mu Iota
Sigma, they get people from many big companies to visit on campus.
I hope this helps you, don't get discouraged, in life what really counts is
not only how hard you try, how long you hold is also important, may be you
will start in a place you don't like but if you keep trying and dreaming hard
you will get where your can only dream of right now.
Have a great Christmas Season and good luck!
