Hi,

I bought a Cisco Router 1601 for my private network at home. The router automatical establishes a connection to my ISP, when a client from the local network tries to access the internet. There is a simple overview of my local network at home:

+---+ Legend:
| C (.10x)---+ C - Computers (IP: 192.168.1.101 - .106)
+---+ | S - Server (SuSE Linux 8.1
192.168.1.0/24 eth0: 192.168.1.1
| eth1: 192.168.2.1)
(.1) R - Router (IOS 12.3(1) IP/FW PLUS IPSEC 56
+-+-+ IP: 192.168.2.254)
| S | ISP - Internet Service Provider
+-+-+ (single user account)
(.1)
|
192.168.2.0/24
| +---+
+---(.254) R (NAT)---+ISP
+---+

Currently all users using my internet account when they surfe on the internet and I do have to pay all costs. That's why I would like to change the configuration of my router, so that I can extract the internet online duration of every single user. Now a short description what I want/mean:

User 1 (U1) is working at his computer (C1). Now he wants to connect to the internet, therefor he has to authenticate himself at the router (Cisco 1601) by his username and password. The router verifies the username and password via a RADIUS server (preferred) or localy. If the data is valid, then the router automatical dials into the ISP. When there is no traffic to the internet within 5 minutes, the router cuts the ISP connection.

The most important thing is to record the time, for how long user 1 (U1) has been connected to the internet. Thereby it doesn't matter that much (but would be a nice feature) which computer (C1 - C6) was used by the user - I urgently need the online duration for every user.

Can the Cisco Router 1601 (IOS 12.3(1) IP/FW PLUS IPSEC 56) be configured to fulfil my requirements? If yes, how does the configuration has to look like and what will happen when more than one user (e.g. U1 and U3) is trying to establish a connection to the internet?

The goal for me is to record the online duration for every user, so that I'm able to separate the costs by user.

Thank you so much for your help.

Lars

What does "internet online duration" mean? I don't think, that you can
do a time-based accounting this way ...

AFAIK not possible this way ...

.... and if someone is using the "existing connection", he can do this
without paying (and the router does not cut the connection, while there
is traffic on the line) ...

It is no problem to configure the cisco so, that after some time with
no traffic the connection will be cut ...

Forget it and try to use some other kind of accounting (maybe based on
the amount of data, that was transferred). Often, more online time does
also result in more data transferred ...

AFAIK no.
