Hi,
I have gotten hold of a 2503 router for use while I study for the CCNA.
Currently this is just the chassis (with no IOS, FLASH and 2MB of RAM?)
sh ver output below:
r1-2503(boot)#sh ver
Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) 3000 Bootstrap Software (IGS-BOOT-R), Version 11.0(10c), RELEASE
SOFTWA
RE (fc1)
Copyright (c) 1986-1996 by cisco Systems, Inc.
Compiled Fri 27-Dec-96 17:33 by loreilly
Image text-base: 0x01010000, data-base: 0x00001000
ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c), SOFTWARE
r1-2503 uptime is 21 minutes
System restarted by power-on
Running default software
cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision N) with 2048K/2048K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 07072665, with hardware revision 00000001
X.25 software, Version 2.0, NET2, BFE and GOSIP compliant.
Basic Rate ISDN software, Version 1.0.
1 Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 interface.
2 Serial network interfaces.
1 ISDN Basic Rate interface.
32K bytes of non-volatile configuration memory.
Configuration register is 0x2102
What IOS version should I be looking to install on it, and also, what would
people recommend for FLASH and RAM etc. I was thinking to max it out at 16MB
FLASH and 8MB RAM, would this enable me to load a recent version of IOS onto
it? (does the 2500 support newer IOS versions?)
I also have access to a 2924XL switch and would like to look at routing
between VLANs on the 2500, will it support this?
Thanks,
Jo |

if you want to run 12.2 then you will need to get 16mb NVRam and 16mb flash.
The unit can support multiple subnets on the AUI port, but you will need to
get a transcever to hook the AUI to 10baseT.

You can configure the switch with VLANs but won't be able to use the 2503
for VLAN routing since you need to be running the ISL trunking protocol from
the switch to the router. ISL protocol requires 100baseT or faster to run.
We ran into this problem in our community college networking academy
program. We got one of the 2500 series routers replaced with a 2600 series
router which had a 10/100 ethernet port which then allowed the running of
the ISL trunking protocol.

Thanks for the comments.
What use is a 2500 router if I cant route between VLANs? What do people
recommend for lab exercises using a 2503 and a 2924XL (I also have access to
a 160x) and was thinking to connect the 2 routers together via the serial
ports using a DB60 crossover cable.
It would have been nice to play with VLAN and routing, but oh well if it
cant be done on the 2503.

In article <iU6Wa.42728$F92.4684@afrodite.telenet-ops.be>,
huppeldeflup@hotmeel.com says...

Not sure about ISL, but you can definitely run dot1q on the 261X models
(requires IP Plus or better)
