It not a dumb question. This one I had the same problem with. What is dumb
is how hard it is to find the answer using the cisco search engine.
It uses a null modem cable. When I hooked it up using any of my pre-existing
null modem cables, I got crap on the screen that looked as if it was trying
to intialize a modem with Hayes codes. My best guess is that on bootup it
checks the handshake lines to see if a terminal is attached. If not, it
assumes that a modem is.
The answer is to wire the null modem cable as follows:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/28201900/1928v5x/icg5x/c
sspec.htm
It worked like a charm.

However I see that it does not use a normal Cisco console Cable but rather
a
9pin serial. Please can you advise what other cables/adapters I will
require
in order to be able to console onto this switch.
Thanks
