Ok,
no IPX questions, No ISDN,
lots of subnet, frame relay and VLAN. Also, two Simulations
Time is your key to success from what I believe

Good luck to everyone

Neither one yet. Studying for CCNA right now. After MCSE, and A+, I've
decided to try my hand at Cisco. I love to learn new things.

You have a nice site. I read a few of the articles as well. You
write very well too. I also like the "braindump" article...I just
wanted to add one other note. A lot of the braindumps come from
taking pictures of the screen with small cameras. It is not just
people relying on their memory.

What I mean to say is that you are probably right about the
individuals that post their "braindumps" on their own website--they
are likely just trying to remember the questions and propagating their
own missed answers.

However, the organized braindump "vendors" send people in to take the
exam with cameras and then they put together "practice tests" that are
an almost one-for-one copy of the real thing. Just thought you might
like to know that if you write any future articles on the subject.

Lastly, since you like to learn new things, have you ever just picked
up a book on some technology that you are interested in? I don't mean
that to come across rude, but you are saying that you are getting CCNA
certified because you want to learn something new. I found that I
learned more in the long run when I stopped focusing on specific
certifications. The reason is that in reading a study guide, it only
hits on the specific points in an exam, not a deep coverage of the
technology. I discovered a few years ago (sort of by accident) that
using certs to guide my study is a bad way to grow true, deep
knowledge. For example, I had gotten a number of CCxx certs (not the
IE) before I even knew that much about how Ethernet operated at a deep
level (beyond stuff like what CSMA/CD stood for). When I later picked
up a book on Ethernet, just for my own interest, I was surprised at
how little I previously knew about the technology that I had always
taken for granted. After that, I vowed to read and understand manuals
on the underlying technology in addition to learning the gear itself.
That approach turned out to be the best thing I have ever decided to
do. I have since read books on ATM, Sonet, etc. all of which will put
you to sleep unless you are just interested in learning. I learned MC
from RFCs too. Some of my most valuable learning came from completely
non-certification related studies.

Not that I am saying you need to avoid certification, not at all. I
am just giving you a tip that I have found to be extremely invaluable:
focusing on the more fundamental layers. I wouldn't propose to tell
anyone this, just those that seem to express a love for learning (sort
of like myself before the layoff environment sapped all my interest in
work related affairs). Anyway, I don't want that to come across as
rude. You may already know this. For a long time I didn't...at the
bookstore, I would browse straight to the study guides and skip all
the general technology books thinking that the study guides were the
best things to read if I wanted to learn something new. As it turns
out the general technology books are written with dramatically higher
quality (study guide publishers are vicious in terms of high pressure
timeline demands) and are far more informative than the study guides.

So for what it is worth...

Couldn't agree more. Halabi's book isn't really geared towards any
cert, but it's quite good. Spurgeon, Comer, Stevens, Miller, Seifert et
al all have excellent books. Not one of them deals with any
certifications. Cert books are good if you know the topic and need to
brush up on some pedantic minutia, but for the most part, they are not
GREAT books. CCIE geared books, however, fair better than most.
