Hey Guys,

I've never used a Cisco router before. I read the self-study book for CCNA
put out by Cisco Press. Lot of theory and stuff, but nothing about the Cisco
routers themselves. Now, I've got my hands on some low end Cisco routers,
model 1721, but I'm a bit lost. Could someone point me to articles or books
that I can read to get my feel around these routers. I'm pretty set with
TCP/IP and general Networking concepts. Just new to Cisco products. Below is
what I get from Hyperterminal, and it doesn't respond to any keystrokes.
Anything I'm doing wrong?

I have seen the problem of re-booting when IOS is incompatible ,not enough
memory available, or the hardware is not operating correctly. Try holding
down the "Break" key on your keyboard when you turn the router on. Hopefully
you will get a prompt "ROMMON>" If the break key does not work then check
your terminal settings Com1 or Com2, 9600,8,N,1,None. If the break key
does work and you are at "ROMMON>" Then you may want to shut off the
router, remove the serial interface modules and try turning on again. If it
still isnt booting, go back to "ROMMON>" This is where you can change the
boot parameters or install a proper IOS for the hardware you have. It is
hard to say for sure since the history of the router is not known, i.e. did
someone install hardware without making sure the IOS is compatible or vice
versa ? As far as books, I always use Cisco's site at www.cisco.com. Try a
search on ROMMON , monitor, installing image, the model number of your
router, or boot .

Okay,

I am able to get to the rommon 1> prompt, however no keystrokes work. tried
scoll ON & OFF also. The router basically belonged to a friend of mine who
got them from work for "testing" then was laid off and never touched them.
Since I was planning on doing my CCNA, i thought I borrow them. He was using
it as paperweight. Is there a place I can get a new or fresh firmware for
these? At this time, the WIC cards are out of the router. This is what I get
on the promtp:

monitor: command "boot" aborted due to user interrupt
rommon 1 >

what can I try next? Cisco has a lot of docs on these routers, but pretty
much all of them require an operational router. I would love to get to that
point.

thanks in advance.

take a look at

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_mod/1700/1721/1721hig/1721trb.htm

it's a start. If you can post your config, and startup-config it would be
good.

I have seen the problem of re-booting when IOS is incompatible ,not
enough
memory available, or the hardware is not operating correctly. Try
holding
down the "Break" key on your keyboard when you turn the router on.
Hopefully
you will get a prompt "ROMMON>" If the break key does not work then
check
your terminal settings Com1 or Com2, 9600,8,N,1,None. If the break key
does work and you are at "ROMMON>" Then you may want to shut off the
router, remove the serial interface modules and try turning on again. If
it
still isnt booting, go back to "ROMMON>" This is where you can change
the
boot parameters or install a proper IOS for the hardware you have. It is
hard to say for sure since the history of the router is not known, i.e.
did
someone install hardware without making sure the IOS is compatible or
vice
versa ? As far as books, I always use Cisco's site at www.cisco.com.
Try
a
search on ROMMON , monitor, installing image, the model number of your
router, or boot .

Hey Guys,

I've never used a Cisco router before. I read the self-study book for
CCNA
put out by Cisco Press. Lot of theory and stuff, but nothing about the
Cisco
routers themselves. Now, I've got my hands on some low end Cisco
routers,
model 1721, but I'm a bit lost. Could someone point me to articles or
books
that I can read to get my feel around these routers. I'm pretty set
with
TCP/IP and general Networking concepts. Just new to Cisco products.
Below
is
what I get from Hyperterminal, and it doesn't respond to any
keystrokes.
Anything I'm doing wrong?

Are you using the copy of Hyperterminal that came with Windows? If
so, try downloading the latest version from Hyperterminal's website
http://www.hilgraeve.com/htpe/ We had problems getting the break to
work for us and I found it to be a bug with the old Hyperterminal
built into windows and the old laptop we were using. Once I got the
new version ( it's free ) of Hyperterminal, we didn't have anymore
problems.

take a look at

it's a start. If you can post your config, and startup-config it would be
good.

He was
using
it as paperweight. Is there a place I can get a new or fresh firmware for
these? At this time, the WIC cards are out of the router. This is what I
get
on the promtp:

monitor: command "boot" aborted due to user interrupt
rommon 1

what can I try next? Cisco has a lot of docs on these routers, but pretty
much all of them require an operational router. I would love to get to
that
point.

thanks in advance.
