Hi
Me too think that experience really counts than certification. I seek
some advise from you people who are climbing peaks in ur career. I have a
masters degree in IT and have good experience with systems and networking -
setup and maintenance in home. Also have done good academic projects. My
dream is to become a network security expert and I regularly keep track of
various news, technologies, newsgroups and constantly update my knowledge.
What I lack is real time experience in a job. I have been applying for jobs
online for about 6 months. I spend some time regularly, daily on the job
websites. Almost all jobs advertised looks for previous experience, even
for level 1 support. If i get a chance for an interview I can prove my
capablities, still didnt get a chance. Tell me how to get a break, am I
missing something?? I have designed my resume good detailing my skills and
projects well. Well taking the CCNA test next month, I dont think thats
gonna help... but will continue with the CCSP path anyway. Whats your
valuable advise for me.
Thanks
Cyb

Try outsourcers/help desk as a start. You work dirt cheap, get no
perks/bonuses, do the same exact job someone two states away is
getting paid twice for, lose quality over number of calls you can take
per hour, but you do get experience. Most major companies do
outsource IT tech support, but some will deny it.
Dell/Microsoft/Earthlink/Gateway/HP, etc. What part of the country
are you in? Others might suggest calling and volunteering time at
non-profit places.

Good luck buddy.

The masters degree you have in IT is worth far more than any certification.
You should think of certifications as bells and whistles to add onto the
main attraction - your degree.

I don't have a magic wand to get you a job I am afraid. It's sad that
people with such ambition as yourself are finding it tough out there. Maybe
it is not the best time to be seeking employment in the networking industry.

To break in without expereience, looking to work on large interesting
projects - without any experience - is an impossibility I am afraid in
today's climate. Have you thought of programming or database work? Then,
when things get better you'd at least have a foot in the door?

Why don't you try volunteering. At least that way you can put some
experience on your resume.

I have had good luck in just calling companies from the yellow pages. Start
at the beginning and ask to speak to the person responsible for hiring
staff. If he/she is unavailiable then you can try and get a name, fax,
voicemail or email address. I kept a spreadsheet and logged all the calls,
responses, whether I sent a resume. I then followed up on calls after a
time. I did this for 1 week and got three interviews the following week. I
started one of those jobs 2 weeks after that on a reasonable salary. I do a
lot of work with VPN's and with PIX firewalls so its great for me as a CCNA
training to become a CCNP.

Good luck with your hunt

Ally
