What does the term smartjack mean?

I found a definition that threw me...

continuity check transponder: A device that is used to interconnect
the Go and Return paths of a circuit at the incoming end, and through
which the detection of an incoming check tone transmits another check
tone to permit a continuity checking of a 2-wire circuit. [After
T1.110-1987] Synonym [loosely] smartjack.

Is the definition above an overkill!!

But I thought a smartjack typicaly (in CCNA related terms) is a jack
(demarcation point) where the telco responsibilities stop, and is also
represents the jack for the customers equipment to plug into.

Thanks.

A demarcation point is where the telco responsibility ends and consumer's
starts. A smartjack is used in T-1 applications. It can be located at the
demarc.

That would make it an rj48 jack. What makes it smart is the ability to loop
the transmit into the receive in either direction without being onsite.
Comes in handy in determining whether the service provider or the CPE is at
fault on a T1.
