Hey Guys!

What seems to be the problem with VoIP?

Missing standards?
TCP/IP not working well with it?
Cheapass consumer products dont deliever sufficient quality?
Cisco hasnt released proper SW opgrades?

Most likely if you are experiencing outrageous problems you have some
duplex mismatches going on somewhere in your network. Cisco has
created this problem in two ways:
1) The Kennedy book states that you can manually set one side of a
link and the other will auto-detect the correct setting. This is
false.
2) Cisco recommends manual setting of links, which statistically is
more likely to result in more configuration problems than if you let
autonegotiate do all the work and just deal with whatever "issues"
might arise due to autonegotiation. Truth be told, you should only
use manual settings for devices with known problems...but that would
require Cisco to announce specifically which products have such known
issues. They must have decided that it would be a better political
move to issue a decree blaming the autonegotiation standard itself
rather than fess up to problems with certain products.

Either way, duplex mismatches will cause horrendous problems with
voice traffic. You might not even notice problem with just data, but
add VoIP and that latent misconfiguration issue becomes readily
apparent.

As for a testament that VoIP as a technology does work, just buy one
of those 3 cent a minute pre-paid phone cards. If you can't tell a
quality difference, then you just might have to conclude that VoIP is
not so bad after all. Of course it should also be mentioned that I am
not aware of one carrier that is using Cisco's VoIP products--they are
pretty much non-existent in the carrier VoIP segment. Not that that
makes them terrible or anything, I just am pointing out that the
products that go into carrier environments are very different than the
ones you would be playing with in an enterprise setting. Quality and
robustness often suffer in products geared toward enterprises, and
that statement is not just targeted at Cisco either. But really, if
you are having bad problems it is probably not related to the quality
of the product, rather a network misconfiguration problem.

We use VOIP were I work. Plus, Cisco is ALL VOIP and only VOIP.
