Just curious if anyone here who did achieved passing scores on the A+
Certification exams did it ONLY through using Mike Meyer's book or another
one of the books.

Personally, I wouldn't trust any single book. I still haven't taken the
tests, but I've been studying everything I can get my hands on. In the last
month or so, I've purchased at least 4 different A+ Certification books,
including Mike Meyer's Passport, Sybex, QUE's ExamCram2 and A+ for Dummies.
If nothing else, they're worth if for the practice questions on the CDs that
come with them. I've also been studying the free online practice tests too,
some of which are better than others.
In my opinion, if you've got the money you should buy and study everything
you can find. You may be able to pass by studying only one book, but it's
better to be safe than sorry.

I’m not sure what you mean by "ONLY".
I used "only" Mike’s two books, All In One A+, and Passport to A+. In
addition to Mike’s books, I used the years of non-professional experience I
had occasionally building boxes, troubleshooting friend’s computers, and for
the purpose of hands on study and experience I also built and networked a
Windows 2000 machine with my 98SE machine.
I also used the practice test that came with the books, but only lightly. I
didn’t bother with the free online tests, ans I wanted to actually learn the
material, not just study to the test questions.

I "only" used his book to brush up on skills I didn't already have with
PC's, I took his practice test's right out of the book and did well enough
that I should have been able to pass the A+ test without reading it, I read
it any way to help me with things I didn't already know.
Now if you are talking about having no PC repair skills at all and going for
your A+ I would his book and at least one other, I have no recommendations
on other books though, of the ones I looked at in the book store while
looking for learning material his seemed to be the most comprehensive book I
have picked up.

In answer to one of the other people who replied I was referring to the
A-i-1 book.
I have practically no hands on experience other than occasionally taking off
the case of my own PC and checking it out. Plus I have downloaded alot of
software which makes tests of the memory and hard drives. This makes me a
"cyber virgin" of sorts. And while I found the book to be very informative,
based on the results of my practice tests so far(I've failed both sets of
exams twice, maybe even three times I forget now)I realize that to pass the
"real" exam I'd need to take a course which I've just now started doing.

if i can throw in my two cents...i used only the school study material (new
horizons) and i also used "a+ certification for dummies" to simplify some
of the more arcane aspects. i did just fine....plus the "dummies" book
focused mainly on the topics there were gonna be covered on the test.

Any suggestions on the os portion, I feel that will be much harder for me. I
don't have w2k to practice with. I hope to take the hardware first.
thanks.......

So you really did mean "only". Well, finances permitting, in addition to
buying both the All In One and Passport to A+ books, I recommend you have at
least two computers. One 9x (Windows 95 or 98) and one Windows 2000 (or XP
will do) computer. You might get a $100 computer at a yard sale, if you look
for one. Be sure to disassemble and reassemble at least one of the
computers.
Ideally, you build yourself a nice new fast computer. After all, it's for
education's sake. ;-) And network at least two of the computers using
TCP / IP with Ethernet and a hub.

I passed it in April 2002, just using the Sybex study guide. Yesterday, I
passed Microsoft Exam 70-210 with just the Sybex guide and testing software
from MeasureUp. So it is possible to pass without hands on and spending
$3000 for courses! It all depends on how well you know and love computers.

Oh yes, lots of us have used the book alone and passed. But probably
most who pass with home study have significant previous knowledge and/or
experience.

Not necessarily. I never touched a server or any other network equipment. I
have no pro experience. I primarily use computers for leisure and the
Internet. I'm just very determined. A guy at IKON told me, "You'll never
pass if you don't take the course". I wanted to prove him wrong. You can
imagine how red his face was when I went back with my cert in hand. |

Hello,
In my opinion getting certified is no big deal. there are lots of dump
available. I recently heard a 12-year-old boy passed the certification
in Pakistan. So you are no different than him.
Its Knowledge which counts and only passing the certification by
memorizing the answers won't help as you do not gain real knowledge. I
am not criticizing you but you should consider following points.
1. How long can you fool any body with a piece of paper
(certification) who is paying you for your work?
2. More importantly, how long can you fool yourself?

Just sat the test today... 933 on OS and 785 on Hardware. Still scratchin'
my head on that one... I have a pretty good hardware background... and I
thought I was pretty shaky on OS. Heh, heh.
Anyway, I just basically used Mike Meyers' All In One and freebie practice
tests... and really tried hard to understand my own limitations and study up
on those weaknesses extra hard. The test is over... and hopefully I'll be
able to get better shots at jobs now to pay for more certs... I still have
lots of learning to do.
Special thanks to Renee... the advice given to my "What else can I do?"
question helped a lot as well. |
