Got a friend at work that is having problems with her internet connection!
After being connected for a short time the connection is dropped!

At first she said that when she was get the mail (Outlook Express) it would
say "Getting message 1 of 16" it would download up to message 4 or 5 and
then drop the connection! I told her to get on and get her mail via the
ISP's website and delete everything in her inbox since I have had problems
with attachments and blank subject lines causing this problem for me! After
descriping how to do this she asked "How would that effect the surfing in
the broswer" Up to this point she had made it pretty clear that the problem
only occured in Outlook Express! She told me that wasn't the case and that
the problem is also occuring in IE! She has called the ISP several times
and they keep checking all her settings and they told her that "Its nothing
internal, its external" and that it had nothing to do with them! This
started to happen after upgrading to WinXP and upgrading the HHD to 60gig
and Ram to 128MB! I told her that maybe her modem needs either replacement
or updated drivers specifically made for XP! Since the ISP told her that
the problem was not internal she doesn't think it could be a problem with
the modem! I gave her a new phone cable and she is going to try that! I
also told her that with the storms that we have had that it could be static
in the line! But she said it was doing it before the storms!

I'm at a lose because I have never seen the system and don't know as much as
I should about XP!

Does anyone else have any ideas what the problem might be!

Could be the modem - I have had a few with dicky capacitors in the past.
When they heat up the connection dies.

If that modem doesn't do the trick I would suggest that you do it hands on -
I'd bet that there is a wrong configuration somewhere. I haven't an XP
machine with a modem handy or I would check the settings.

Hi
I presume that this is a dailup telephone account. If your friend sees
telephone trucks working in her end of town, then it could be temporary
bridge taps that will be removed when the construction is done. Dave

By upgrading to XP maybe that put to much strain on the CPU. I had this
problem and it was the CPU couldn't handle the win modem. I put a hardware
modem in the machine and have not had a problem since. I had tried three
other brands of win modems in this machine before I came up with the true
modem. Try a modem that is Linux Compatible.

XP and 128MB is cutting it fine if there's a lot of apps and background
processes on the PC, so more memory would be useful, but for the specific
modem problem I'd look elsewhere first.

Checking the modem + cables by substitution would be an idea. After that:

Check for updated drivers
Have phone line provider (not the ISP) check the line and adjust the line
gain if poss.
Use another phone socket and/or try PC in another house if poss.
Is 'call waiting' set on the phone line (if so, disable)
Is the disconnect after a specific amount of time or random? (someone
picking up another phone on the line?)

I work at a small ISP and I see this all the time. It usually happens the
first couple of days after a big thunderstorm. I've probably had 10 calls
like this in the past week. I'd try replacing the modem, possibly with an
external.
www.geeks.com has some for $25.00 or so.
