I'm going to a college where everyone gets a laptop computer.

Obviously, everyone will want to be in complete control of his own computer.
Therefore, he will belong to a local administrator account. What I am
confused about is network groups.

Can each individual administrator account be assigned to a less-powerful
network group? Is there a special applet for this inside of a Win2k Server
system? You can control only local accounts inside of Professional...

Hmm - are they given to you or loaned to you?
If they are loaned I would expect that you have advanced privelleges, but
possibly not administrator. However, local administrator means just that -
local. The network admin will probably asign your name into his uses group
and can control where you can go & what you can do from there.

I have seen this handled in several ways.

1. Give the students XP and then they won't know that there is an
administrator acocunt

2. Use ghost to image it and if they mess it up reimage it and boom
they get all thier stuff blown away.

3. Remember on 2000 Local acocunts and domain acocunts can exist
together. So you get a local administrator account and thene there is
the domain administrator account that only the NOS administrator nad
his back up get.
