I have inserted the XP disk into a PC that does not have the XP PID label
which has been mislaid and is not stuck on the case. (I know this is
genuine) I cancelled this dirty, over the top re-installation when it
reached the PID screen.

Now the PC continually reboots and wants the XP disk reinserted to finish
setup.

Is it possible to get out of this loop and boot the PC to its original
installation?

(I have not repartitioned or reformatted and we have not found the XP PID
code yet)

I can get to the Repair Console but can't find an appropriate command. I
can DIR C:\Windows is there a file that could be deleted to stop XP setup so
it will boot to the original installation. Help appreciated - Thanks.

If you have to orginal disc call microsoft and they will give you a new
code. You have to have the orginal cd in order to do this. They require
the numbers printed on the disc. I have done this so I know it works.

Can you boot the original OS in safe mode? If so, boot it into safe
mode (with networking) and snag a copy of Autoruns from
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html. It should be
obvious what is loading the XP setup program.

Suppose the first question should be, what was the former OS and did you

choose a new install or an upgrade?
If none destructive;
Safe Mode or Safe Mode with a Cmd prompt (then explorer.exe).
MSconfig to determine the Startup process/path.
Start - Run - (type) sysdm.cpl - Enter (Ok).
Advanced Tab - Startup and Recovery Button -Settings - Edit the Boot.ini
file to get rid of the setup path.
a cmd %SystemRoot% will reveal the current OS directory.

If Recovery Console;
Bootcfg /list
Bootcfg /scan
Bootcfg /rebuild
(be ready to add the options ie /fastdetect and optionally the optin
deal, the OS name can be whatever you like).

You might want to Google a might for other options or at least to read
something like this;
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314058

This is why I create a disk image of my OS partition before doing anything major.

So, what do you do when a customer did it without making a disk image
first?

I should have said that I first create a disk image of any computer before I
touch it. Not just my own.

I remember desperately trying to repair my snowblower (and I ain't no
mechanic) when it wouldn't start. The snow was several feet deep and the
repair shops were booked for a solid two weeks. My god, when I finally gave
up "repairing" the snowblower there were all these little springs, bolts and
mysterious parts all over the garage floor. There was no way I could put it
back together again. I shoveled the snow out by hand -- an all day affair. I
finally managed to bring the snowblower into the shop (with a bazillion parts
in a bag). I screwed up the snowblower so badly, they would have to order
whole new assemblies. Meaning, really big bucks.

Although you already understand the point of this analogy, I'll state it
anyway: Sometimes users screw things up so badly, there is no easy repair --
if one at all.

To answer your question: I rarely guess how a computer or a program should be
fixed without the computer or source code being in front of me. Too many
unknowns.

This may not help but try selecting last known good configuration in the
alternate startup menu. Other than that I would backup your data and do a
pristine install. You can access your data by placing your hard drive in
another computer as a secondary/slave drive, installing a parallel copy of
the operating system, or booting from a cdrom with something like Bart's PE.
Note that if you have any encrypted EFS files you will not be able to access
them if you do a pristine install of the operating system unless you have a
backup of your EFS private key in a password protected .pfx . You can also
install to the same \windows folder without formatting the system drive that
exists now which will preserve your data [other than EFS files] but require
that you reinstall all your applications since they will not be in the
registry of the new installation. --- Steve
