I am trying to help a non-tech install a new mobo. Mobo has
cpu/fan/ram. First I had her test the mobo. Only the monitor, KB, and
power were connected. Everything worked. Then she put the mobo in the
case, again only monitor, kb, and and power connected. The board
powers up, then immediately shuts off. I had her attach the PC
speaker, it beeps once before it shuts off.

Have tested and re-tested the ram installations. Everybody is being
very careful about static electricity. Very careful to be delicate
with the board. All nylon spaces etc. are there.

Any ideas?

I ran into a situation once where the motherboard came with the CMOS
clear jumper installed. Did you check for that yet?

Have her take the mobo back out and see if it works outside the case

an extra metal standoff in the case that's causing the mobo to short. If
it does the same thing as it did when mounted then ask her if she had
any screwdriver slips while tightening the mounting screws. It's very
easy to cut a trace on the mobo if you're not careful when tightening
the screws.

A quick story: Last week I had a guy try to return a new mobo to me
saying that it wouldn't initialize. I took a good look at it before
giving him another and found two big gouges next to one of the mounting
holes which cut straight through three or four traces on the board. I
showed this to him and he, of course, denied causing it. I then reminded
him that when he purchased the board he asked to see it work before
taking it home - he also purchased a CPU, memory and video at the same
time. At this point he just stood there with his mouth wide open.
Instead of arguing I took the board (and him) into my workshop and did a
quick repair with my trusty soldering iron and a few pieces of 28ga
wire. I plugged it in and it POSTed with no problem - his mouth was
still open as I sent him on his way.

Try loosening the mounting screws see if it boots, if it does, power off,
tighten one screw, powerup, contonue till you find the culprit. I have seen
two that apparently had a short between the layers of the motherboard In may
case they were both used boards on some of my personal junkers, I just left
the offending hole(s) empty and both are still working (one a biostar P-200
that I personally used for three years, still works but is sitting idle at
the moment, the second an abit athlon 900 still in use after two years) On a
new purchase I might have considered contacted the manufacturer for an RMA.

No. But it worked out of the case. Why would work out of the case but
not in the case?

I think you may be onto something. Remember this woman is brand new to
this stuff. Practically never touched the inside of a PC before. She
has a friend helping her, but he is not much better.

She is smart, and she follows directions well, and I honestly believe
that she did her very best to be careful. She doesn't think she did
anything wrong. But. . .

Remember, I'm only on the phone. Can't see anything, can't touch
anything.

Oh yea, she took the mobo back out of the case, re-tried the same test
that worked before, only this time the mobo acts the same as when it
was in the case. One beep then turns off.

Thing is, I had her take the mobo back out, re-test it the same as she
did before - only this time it work as it did before. I guess she
broke it. *sigh* another $120 down the tubes.

Don't give up yet. Have her pull the RAM, install it in a different
socket and make *** sure it's seated all the way. Also, try resetting
the CMOS using the jumper near the battery - maybe the clocks got
screwed up? Another thing, be sure to try it without the keyboard and
mouse connected..... If it still looks dead and the mobo is new just
exchange it for a good one. As long as there is no physical damage to
the board the seller should have no problem taking care of it. Just
because it worked once outside the case doesn't mean your friend did
anything wrong to kill it. It may simply have gone bad. Good luck.

Tried re-seating the ram, also tried removing kb and mouse. Have not
tried reseting the cmos, maybe I'll give that a try next. I bought the
mobo on ebay, I doubt I can send it back.
