Well, the document has to get into the computer in some way. If it's a
computer created document (Word document, Excel Spreadsheet, JPEG photo,
Corel Draw drawing, etc., etc.), it's already there. Otherwise, you
definitely need a scanner. Your HP is fine.

Beyond that, to directly send a "true" fax, you need a modem with fax
capability (almost all of them have it), and some fax software. WinFax
Pro by Symantec is the most pervasive fax software package, but there
are lots of other packages, some free, and some (including "lite"
version of Winfax) bundled with many other products. There is a good
chance that you already have at least one "lite" software product that
will do it. It's likely that the scanner came with some such software,
in fact.

In most cases, basically, the fax software is a "printer driver" and you
"print" to the fax driver, which, instead of printing, dials the modem
and sends the fax.

There are some indirect ways of sending an E-Mail that gets converted to
a fax by an outside service, but this is a bit less straightforward.

Hi,

Id like to send a fax to someone, what do I need?
I have XP pro SP1,windows fax console is installed, a scanner (HP3500c), a
printer (HP720c).
Can I just scan a document and send it to the fax number provided to me or
do I need a specific fax/printer thing.

Regards

You do have the fax capabilities if you have XP Pro. You do have to make
sure that the "fax printer" is installed with your printer (it shows as just
another printer. Then it all depends if you want to send a document already
on your system or scan something to send.

When you think about it, the fax printer driver is just another printer. The
only difference is that it sends the document (or graphic from your scanner)
somewhere else courtesy of your modem rather then printing it locally.
