Just wanted to wish all tech support people well today when half of your
customers start calling to say their computers are mysteriously rebooting
over and over.

Mine started last night at about 4:30 CDT. At that time there wasn't any |
info on it. This morning it was all over Google News and I had the cleaning
tool from Symantec by 8:15. By 9:30 I had checked the office PCs for it and
cleared them whew.

One weird situation on this: Went to a customer's house after he
called with all the symptoms indicating the Blast Worm was present. I
used Symantec's fix and it found NO worm present.
So I installed the MS patch and he's not getting the errors and
reboots anymore. |

Actually, it was dead today. We got hit by the SQL Slammer worm a
couple of months ago. So, we learned from that experience. We had all
of our systems patched over a week ago. The only systems that were not
patched were medical systems out of our control. These vendors claim
that they need FDA approval before they can apply the RPC patch. We
warned the departments & vendors that these medical devices would be
disconnected from the network if a worm or virus was released. And
guess what? It was! Our very astute MIS pulled the plug on these
devices last night. Due to his quick action, we are safe.
I think some of the vendors are now coming around.

What patch from microsoft should I use?

All of them. Go to the Windows update site, and install every critical
update. Then check the site at least once a week for new updates.

I don't see what the big deal is. I guess that is the reward for already
having computers updated. The patch for this came out a month ago. :^) I
am glad everyone has job security though.

The sad thing is that since I work for an ISP we made a decision in the |
morning to supply the patch and cleaning tool for free, or $1.00 if they
don't have a CDR to trade. I haven't made a penny on this thing yet and I
am too busy to work on many computers that do have it right now. I guess I
need to get on building that new server.

Hi !
Why dont you get a Virus Scanner like Sophos with the Enterprise
Manager.
You can set him to download every hour new virus updates and spread it
to all the clients.
This saved us a lot of trouble ...

I went to the Windows Update site yesterday and the new patch for
Blaster Worm wasn't available on the automatic update system -- I had to
go to the MS URL specified in Symantec's fix page to find it.

The new patch? I guess you mean the one for when you already have it? If
so, that would be downloaded from your anti virus vendor. The preventive
patch from Microsoft has been available since July 16.

No, I meant the preventive patch. I thought it had just come out.
Thanks for the info.
