....dealing with a hard drive wiped clean. (Suspect virus).
HP Pavilion XT958
Was running XP home. Diskpart shows an empty c: drive and also the hidden
drive where the recovery disk is kept.
Looking for advice on how to proceed and I have some questions this problem
has raised.
1) Can't access recovery partition. HP website instructs to use F10 at first
splash. Of course this fails. Any suggestions here?
2) What is good recovery software (cheap, hopefully) to go after lost files.
This is a friend/coworker's unit and is not to concerned in this area.
However, I am studying for the A+ cert. and need to know how to do this.
3) How is that hidden partition set-up? Why doesn't it show up as a drive?
Anything you can tell me would be helpfull.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and any help or suggestions you
may have.

Did the virus wipe the hard drive, or did you after suspecting a
virus?
HP site says you may recover after an Fdisk by using Fdisk /mbr. If
that fails the only other options seems to be a fee for recovery disks
or install another OS. Course you do have the OEM license for XP Home,
so install is possible with an OEM disk (or PID modification). This
does not replace any applications that HP shipped. Not sure what they
charge, shouldn't be more than $10-20.
Good luck.

I've done a few of these. Did you format the drive manually? If so, why
didn't you run the system recovery program from within Windows? The
"destructive" option in the program formats the drive and installs all OS
components, drivers, and apps that the PC had preloaded from the factory. I
did have one system that would not run System Recovery from Windows due to
file corruption, but I rebooted and pressed F10 REPEATEDLY at the blue
screen and the system did boot into system recovery mode. This post may not
help you with your current problem, but will hopefully help you should you
run into this again.

Again, thank you for taking time to respond.

The good old "we apologize" usually requires a patch diskette from HP
to get things up and running again, if I recall correctly. You may
find something on HP's site...go there and do a search for the word
"apologize"; also, there is information in the MS KB about this
problem.
