Good day to all!
I have a challenge with a VLAN idea that is being presented to me.
I am told that I can elliminate a main interface router in my environment which has 8 separate subnets attached to it and replace it with a Cisco 3560 10/100/1000 switch and use VLANs to route traffic.
My first thought is, how are my DHCP Broadcasts going to find the DHCP Server? Secondly, how would I make an Exchange Server part of every VLAN?
Everything I read about VLANs describes a physical network topology divided into logical groupings like marketing, accounting, production regardless of geographical location. That common services would route via a "ROUTER".
VLAN1 can be on any VLAN capable switched Lan or on the other side of a router.
But nothing I can find has defined the ability to take a main interface router out of the equation and allow the switch to do all the routing and broadcast management.
The likability of the idea is ofcourse... Gigabit throughput over ethernet and FDDI in my environment.
Is it possible and where should I look?
