Go here:

Click Downloads, scroll down to Data Advisor 5, download it and run it from
a floppy to check your HDD.

Hello all:

I'm having a problem with my computer, after uninstalling Windows ME.

I decided to install Windows 98 SE(a clean install), but, after
repartitioning, and reformating, I'm getting application errors! I'll
remind you that my hard drive has nothing on it.

I went as far as trying to reinstall Windows ME, and I'm still getting
errors. Also, I went inside the box, and reseated everything.

I ran scanreg /fix, and it tells me that there are errors, and it's
unable to fix them. Isn't the registry on the hard drive? If it is,
it's in a place where format can't erase it.

I think my hard drive is shot, and don't have another hard drive to
test the problem.

What do you think? Please help!!

You don't give any info about the hardware you have.

I suggest you visit the manufacturers website and try to find some
diagnostic tools, and do a Google search on the model number to see if
there's a history of similar problems.

The registry is on the hard drive. But only after you install a
windows operating system. You might be thinking of the master boot
record which is placed on a hard drive when you install it using fdisk
or some other disk utility. Did you run fdisk? Try fdisk /mbr -the
/mbr switch overwrites the boot record that wasn't erased with a
simple format. However, you may still have hardware issues. Go to the
manufacturer's web site and search for RMA instructions. RMA is for
Return Merchandize Authorization. They have tools to see if it really
is the hardware before authorizing the return on warranty work. As an
A+ guy get used to the RMA process as it will become a necessary part
of your job. If the hard drive is shot replace it.

Make sure the drive's identified properly in CMOS. Even setting it to PIO-2
or 4 might help, UDMA may not work if the cable's not up to it and the
problems will be intermittent. If your board has SMART you could enable
that to see if it detects a problem, though it's not all that reliable.

I'd first check memory with Memtest-86.

Just so you know, I wrote my previous post to you before I'd read your
post below.

ALWAYS TEST MEMORY ***FIRST***.

Isn't that a bi?ch!

Strange for more than one to go at the same time, unless it took the
second one going bad to actually create serious problems after the
first one had failed at some time in the past.
