In L.A. , a polite smile and a "we'll call you", because 300 other guys with
higher qualifications are applying for the job. Seriously tho, it depends on
your area. Here a guy like you who lands a job starts at about $12 an hour
(that's $20 an hour in San Francisco and $8 an hour in Oklahoma for
comparison) Look kid, my advice to you, besides going to college and getting
that B.A. in Comp Sci. is to network ( not ethernet, I mean get out and
meet people). Find a professional association that meets in your area and
join it. DO the rounds at Best Buy, CompUSA and Fry's ( west coast) and get
your face in their heads. Ask about internships. Enroll in college, THEN ask
about internships ( employers love that, they want first crack at you then.)
BE a technician. A+ doesn't carry the weight it deserves mainly because a)
drain dumps and paper certed dorks who know nothing about the box. and
B)despite being called A+, its not intended to be representative of a top
notch techncian who knows computers in side out, but rather a guy who's been
at it for 6 months--an entry level certification. I would love to see a
master technician certification that tested the way Cisco tests their CCIE's
and was recognized industry-wide as a stamp of aptitude, but for some reason
no one is interested in recognizing techs like Kony over at
alt.comp.hardware or Thor at alt.computer, two guys who have knowledge and
ability that ONLY comes with years and years of experience and learning. Yet
in this industry their very careers are income limited because the extensive
experience they have means nothing.
