|
|
I'm sure newb questions get asked over and over....
Browsing the google achrives have presented all the recomended study
aids, etc etc..... But on thing I'm curious about is the following:
I have zero work-related computer experience.... I guess just your
typical techie. Built all my computers from scratch over the years...
and am the person that everyone calls w/ their computer-related
problems. Formatted/re-installed the OS (95 through XP) more times
than I can count over the years on my, and other's machines.....
nothing special, but I suppose a leg up on someone w/ zero experience
what-so-ever.
And not that it would necessarily be helpful for the basic certs, but
also run a couple un-managed dedicated linux webservers... and which
I've had to configure all the good stuff (logging, firewall, configs
etc etc) remotely..... all with very few problems, and guided by the
help of some message boards.
Anywho.. onto my question... and I know I haven't provided much more
than a very basic generalization of what I already know... but what
kind of time would I expect with a little dedication to studying
before I could walk in and pass the tests? Again, I know that's a
lil bit of a generalization, and depends on the person in question....
but just trying to get a basic feel of what to expect.
Admittedly, after a quick overvew on some of the CompTia sites out
there, there is some areas that I'm not familiar with, but after quick
read-through appears to be info that I feel would be easily picked up
with a little study.
Any and all help/guidance/tips apprecaited
Thanks Much

Phil,
Only you will know if you are ready to take the tests. You seem to
know quite a bit already. Grab an A+ book (like the on from Mike
Meyers) and dig in. Reinforce what you all ready know and pick up the
new topics. You might try to look for the Transcenders to get an idea
of the types of questions you will face.
Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply Crispy...
Thanks for the Trancenders recomendation. Downloaded the demo and
ran through the demo test based on what I already know.... Failed
both, but around where I figured (and all wrong answers, were answers
I left blank intentionally (instead of guessing) in an attempt to
guage where Im at, but woulda guessed correctly on some had I done so)
Core score 722/900 (780 to pass)
OS score 633/900 (732 to pass)
and I do understand that the demo is an extremely limited set of
questions and shouldn't put any stock into them guaging my actual
level of knowledge at the moment.
Question..... is dropping $170 on the Trancender tests going to mean
much difference over, say, a Meyers book given, what I assume, is
already a decent amount of knowledge and aptitude in this area?
I'm definitely purchasing a Meyers book..... and more than likely a
2nd just for safe-measure...... but the Transcender tests? Are they
going to provide any substantial amount of additional info over the
Meyers $20? upgrade questions? Or more for just a tool to guage your
level of knowledge?
In other words.... unless it's going to seriously help me, I've got
more important things to spend $170 on.... but could/would if needed.
Thanks again, much appreciated

Phil,
The trancenders will give you an idea as to the types of questions you
will encounter on the test and point out the areas that you need to
improve. I don't know if it's worth $170, try looking in
alt.binaries.cbts or alt.binaries.warez.eduacaional or on the P2P
networks (kazzaa), sometimes they are posted there.
Try google for A+ study guides and practice tests. Look for Test
killer, test king, troy tech.
Check out the exam cram books http://www.informit.com/examcram2/
