|
|
A few days ago I installed a new hard drive in a friends PC, then installed
Windows ME. Everything seemed to be working fine 'till I received a phone
call from him saying he's getting a "Communication Port" error when trying
to use the printer.
It's an Epson printer connected by a USB that worked properly with his old
hard drive. Furthermore, when he hooked his old hard drive back up the
printer worked like normal, but no such luck with the new drive.
In Windows it seems as if everything is set up properly and ready to go, but
I feel there's something wrong between the hardware and the OS. Does the USB
port need to be set up in BIOS? or maybe there's a utility disk that sets it
up?
I'd appreciate any help on this one, thank you. |

Check in BIOS that USB ports are enabled, check in Printer Properties that
Windows is looking for it on the right port and check Device Manager that
there's no problem with USB controllers. Also check that the drivers were
written for ME.

Remember, when installing USB devices, you MUST install the drivers FIRST,
then connect the device. If you had the device connected first, it will
generally not work. |

I had a lady call me yesterday with the same problem. Open the
'Printers' folder, right-click on the Epson printer then click
'Properties'. When the properties window opens click the 'Details' tab.
Look for the 'Ports' listing and see if the 'Epson USB Printer Port' is
listed as the active port - I'll bet it isn't. It's probably trying to
print to LPT1. Click the drop-down and see if an Epson USB port is
listed there. If it is, simply set it to print to that port and you're
done. If not, go back to the printers folder and delete the Epson
printer. Then go to control panel then click 'Add/Remove Programs'. Look
for any and all Epson entries and 'Remove' them. Restart the system when
Windows asks but TURN OFF THE PRINTER before allowing it to boot up.
When you're back to the desktop, turn on the printer and watch for the
'New Hardware Found' wizard. At this point you'll have to show Windows
where to look for drivers on the Epson drivers CD - D:\Drivers\Win98/ME
& D:\Drivers\Common are typical. DO NOT let the installation continue if
Windows gets stupid and can't locate the correct driver files - just run
a 'Find' to retrieve the correct locations and point Windows to them.
Good luck. BTW, the printer we were working with was a Stylus Color 740.

You probably don't have the printer installed correctly for a USB port.
I'd guess that it was installed for a parallel port.
