Hi
I am getting ready for the exam and would like to know the format. The
practice exams that I am doing are all in multiple choice format but I have
been told that the actual exam is all simulations. Can anyone clear this up
for me please?
Thanks
Dennis. |

I just took both the Hardware and the OS exams last week. They were
both multiple choice.

It was all multiple choice when I went in summer 2004. I know there have
been talks about an updated test on the way but until then, I would say 'no
sims'.

The best way to take the OS test is make sure you know your commands and
paths to thoses commands and also know your short cuts if you like all that
you should do fine i passed both the OS and Core about 2 hours apart in the
same day so it is quite easy to do if you put the work in to it .

I am a little lost with the OS exam because I am not sure what type of
questions they will ask.

| Quote: | Please point out to me where I said that "Exams are for learning". The whole
purpose of my previous post was to point out that he should LEARN the
material BEFORE taking the exam.

Then you should have wrote that, because what you actually wrote was:
| Quote: | I also don't recommend making 'good guesses' when it comes to taking the
exams. Guessing at questions will not give you the knowledge you need in
order to pass the exams, nor will it provide you with the understanding
you'll need for future reference once you're working as an A+ Technician.
|
The point you missed was what to do when you see a question on the
actual exam and don't know the answer. SAT prep books cover this the
same way.
| Quote: |
And to be sure, it
assesses some random skills that are of no obvious value in the future.
What? Are you serious? So, just because something is of no value to you,
then that means that it is of no value to EVERYONE in the world? Every
question has SOME relevance.
|
There are lots and lots of CompTIA questions that have no *obvious*
value on the job, always have been, always will be. Their value *today*
is in providing enough questions...they are fillers written by SMEs so
they meet their quota and can go home early on Friday. (I know this to
be true.) A couple paraphrased examples I've collected over the years:
"What is the acronym for video graphics array?"
"How thick is a Type II PC Card?" (in mm)
something about replacing a laptop's power cube inverter board

Not guessing will not give you knowledge, also.

My point was that if you've worked in the field long enough AND you've gone
over the material enough, you won't NEED to worry about coming across
questions that you don't know the answer to.
Is it THAT difficult of a concept to take in? --> KNOW your s**t before you
take the test! <--
|
Have you ever taken a cert exam and known every answer, unequivocally?
Of course not. When it happened what did you do?

You're obviously not familiar with the concept of CompTIA exams being geared
toward the *beginning* computer technician. The exams were designed for the
technician with 6-12 months of experience. When you're *new* to the IT field
those questions have a lot of value. Like I said before, JUST because they
are of no value to you does NOT mean that they have no value to others in
the field.
|
Oh come on, you're just being argumentative now. I'm fully aware of the
number of hours experience CompTIA recommends (they dropped the use of
months several years ago...)
But if you think there's no junk on the exams then please explain how
an entry-level tech is going to *use* the bits of knowledge presented
in those three questions. Is he going to be building a PC Card socket
and needs to know the dimensions? Where is the value in knowing the
thickness in mm? What possible scenario would require this detail
Failure analysis and repairing a laptop power cube? Who does that? To
the entry tech this is a disposable black box, period. The things
cannot be opened anyway, can they. If someone does repair these I'd
love to hear about how and where.
And the VGA question is just stupid, especially in the context of the
other 80 technical questions on the exam, so don't even attempt to
defend it. Besides, the other question I saw on the SAME EXAM was "What
does VGA stand for?"
