Received the following error in the application log file:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: VSS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 12298
Date: 4/4/2006
Time: 10:54:47 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The I/O writes cannot be held during the
shadow copy creation period on volume
\\?\Volume{3dae2aba-a892-11d9-a3de-806e6f6e6963}\. The volume index in the
shadow copy set is 0. Error details: Open[0x00000000], Flush[0x00000000],
Release[0x80042314], OnRun[0x00000000].

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

0018: 38 35 36 00 00 00 00 00 856.....

Received the following error on BackupExec 10D:
ackup- \\SERVER\
AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open
File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) snapshot provider returned the
error: "Catastrophic failure". To make sure that the VSS is not disabled and
can be started, click Control Panel, and then click Administrative Tools.
Open the Services, and start Volume Shadow Copy. Check the Windows Event
Viewer for details.

The reason for this failure is due to the Volume Shadow Copy Services (a
Microsoft Service.) We have the BackupExec set to backup System State
Information. In order to do this, BackupEx calls the VSS service to start and
take a snap shot of the Volume Copy Compoenents. However, when BackupExec was
calling this Service to start, the Event Viewer Log logged the following
error message:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The I/O writes cannot be held during the
shadow copy creation period on volume
\\?\Volume{3dae2aba-a892-11d9-a3de-806e6f6e6963}\. The volume index in the

Release[0x80042314], OnRun[0x00000000].

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Basically, stating that the service could not be started. Is there a way to
fix this issue from recurring?

Thanks,

Hey Rogene,

In your Services, make sure Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider Service is
enabled and started. Try backup again. If continues to fail, reboot the
machine. Let us know how this works out.

Hope this helps,

The service is enabled and started. The machine has been rebooted since,
this error has occured and continues to occur. Any other ideas?
