Ok this is what I have. I have a mapped drive created for a user who uses it
to backup their work (its mapped to the file server). Under that drive there
are about 5 or 6 folders. If you go under the security tab for the ACL it
shows Everyone. The user would like for this share/folder to only be accessed
by himself and he cant make the changes to the ACL from his desktop (I assume
because the Network Admin created this share for him). What I did was remove
the Everyone group from the ACL, added his name and gave him full control on
the map drive/parent folder. Now he can access the parent folder, but he
cant access 3 of the 6 child folders on the drive nor can he edit the ACL
himself. These folders were created over the last few months. He can access
the other folders but not these. Where do I go to allow him full access to
ALL of the folders, subfolders and files under the parent folder/drive?
Since I made the change he can only access a few of them. Any suggestions?? |

Messing with permissions can create a mess - what follows comes from memory
(and that may not be too sharp!). ACL should not be used to set
permissions - ACL's purpose is to track users who have access and not to
detail permissions. Try: rt. click>shared folder>sharing tab>permissions and
you should be able to determine users and their permissions - generally only
an Administrator or the Creator-Owner may set and/or change permissions.

give full control to system and administrators on the root folder
then give creator owner full control on subfolders and -files
give the users read and list permissions on the root folder only
then let them create their own folders as they see fit
to reassign permissions is the easy part
to set permissions so you don't need to change permissions by hand
anymore is the toughest of them all ;-)
for now you have to give that user full control on his folder and
replace permissions on all of the subfolders (advanced view)
then let him take the ownership
be sure you have an administrative account have full control
helping out a user will be much easier that way

Ok, he didnt create the folder but it is for him to use only. So it is
probably a good idea to give him ownership of it??
