I noticed this when I initially did a system restore from directory
services restore mode, I didn't catalog it then, but I tried recreating
the "event" and sure enough there it was...(i can afford to mess with
this domain, but I want to get to the bottom of this before I need to
consider such actions on a production domain)

Basically, I just created a backup of the System state using the
windows backup utility and then I restored from that backup [as soon as
the backup was done] using "directory services restore mode". After I
restarted I noticed the following event in the "Directory Service"
event log.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Event Type: Information
Event Source: NTDS Replication
Event Category: Replication
Event ID: 1109
Date: 4/18/2006
Time: 9:56:31 AM
User: N/A
Computer: PANTERA
Description:
Active Directory has been restored from backup media, or has been
configured to host an application partition. The invocationID attribute
for this domain controller has been changed. The highest update
sequence number at the time the backup was created is as follows.

InvocationID attribute (old value):
78bb1e87-ba38-4477-a02f-10bf8b56cbee
InvocationID attribute (new value):
a9420c64-1fcb-4340-b95f-d8d25b68e6c8
Update sequence number:
32834

The invocationID is changed when a domain controller is restored from
backup media or is configured to host a writeable application directory
partition.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was wondering about that InvocationID attribute...I noticed that this
numerical value corresponds exactly with the automatically created
Alias(CNAME) record created for my DC/DNS server in the root of the
_msdcs.<domain name> zone.

My question is: do I have to manually change that record now to reflect
the new value [if possible actually]...and are there any other changes
that I have to consider when restoring from backup [assuming only one
DC and not having to deal with the authoritative restore issues].

After the restart I also noticed the following informational event in
the DNS server event log...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Event Type: Information
Event Source: DNS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 800
Date: 4/18/2006
Time: 9:54:32 AM
User: N/A
Computer: PANTERA
Description:
The zone 1.140.10.in-addr.arpa is configured to accept updates but the
A record for the primary server in the zone's SOA record is not
available on this DNS server. This may indicate a configuration
problem. If the address of the primary server for the zone cannot be
resolved DNS clients will be unable to locate a server to accept
updates for this zone. This will cause DNS clients to be unable to
perform DNS updates.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This would seem to confirm that something was changed/and needs to be
changed, because I've had no DNS issues of ANY type until now, and I've
made no other changes.

This was a very clean system...mostly no event errors of any type. I'm
just a little beduzzled about having such issues when doing such a
simple thing as restoring from a backup. Since backup restores are
something that most admins have to go through at least once or twice, I
was wondering if anyone also noticed this, and I'd really appreciate
any insights...thanks
