Hi! What's the benefit of getting the CAL licenses with SA for my users if
i've SA already for my servers? In terms of support from Microsoft, will
there be any different? Another question is that, will i get any technical
support by phone from Microsoft if i purchase the servers with SA?
Thks! |

Bill,
It's going to be a terminal server. What do I need to look out for?
Thanks!

There are a few more specific rules when talking about a Terminal Server.

I've got a W2k3 server that needs to join a different domain. Will I
lose licensing from the old domain and need to re-install it?
Thanks!

There are server and client licenses.
You will need 2 x Windows 2003 Server licenses + 1 x Exchange Server license
Client licenses (CALs) are user or device (computer) based. If you have a
call centre running 24 x 7 with 3 shifts of 30 people (90 staff) then device
licenses are better, however in the majority of businesses I find user CALs
are better.
Now you can apply the CALs as "per server" or "per user". Per server
would be for standalone servrs, like in a DMZ. In a domain environment
(like you have), your CALS cover the DEVICE or the USER to connect to any
server in the domain.
Thatis, you only need to buy the extra 5 license and you are laughing.

We have a server running w2k3 with exchange. It currently has 25 licences
for both windows and exchange. Now we have to buy 5 new licences for each
but we also want to install a new server as another dc and to move the
document across to using the old server just as an exchange. Will I need to
buy another 30 licenses for the new server or am I ok to stick with the 30 I
will have to connect to the new server and the dedicated exchange box
Cheers
