Does anyone know where to find documentation of the importance of shutting
down a server vs. just powering it down?
I understand the problems associated with it, but I need documented proof
for a manager. |

It is so obvious that I don't think anybody wrote something....
It's like putting your hand in hot water... do you need a proof?
You can always tell your manager you will write it down just make him
authorize you powering off all your server removing the plugs... and wait...
You will write a good report :-)
jokes apart if I find something i'll post....

Sounds a bit strange that the server shuts down only in the morning.
In any case, since it was bought from Dell [and assuming you bought the
server license from them], Dell saying that it's not hardware problem is
a bit lame.
You should push to have them help you solve it.
An alternative is reinstalling Server 2003 with no service pack or
updates (other than what it comes with) and see if it still reboots. If
not, install SP2 and see if it reboots. If not add a couple of updates
per day and see if it reboots. With SP2 there aren't many updates to go
through. :-)

Hi
thanks 4 ur reply. it is not shutdown fixed time. for ex. one day
morning 8.30 & another day it will become 10.00 AM. server logs are
taken & we contacted Dell for support. they assured not any hardware
issues.
We have tested the RAM replacement too.

If it's at a fixed time, check for scheduled events that might be the
cause.
The server logs might also contain clues as to the cause.
