|
|
Hello,
I've seen some connectivity issues for my GC. The defrag happens twice a
day - 12 hour intervals. Is there a way to schedule the defrage or to limit
it to once a day?
Thanks |

Is there any specific reason you believe the default online degrag is
causing a problem with connectivity? If so, honestly this is the first I've
heard of such. The online defrag is done to keep performance optimized.
Are there any erroros in the Event logs of any of your DCs? Can you describe
the connectivity issues and exactly what is happening and why you believe
the defrag is causing it? An ipconfig /all would be helpful as well. There
are other tools too, but let's start off with this stuff first and work from
there to help you out.

I can still connect to the server. But file transfers to and from the
server from any workstation happen to be slow at the time of the defrag.
Could be something else but I figure if I could change that one item it
might help me track down the issue. The disk array is not showing any
unusual activity at the time of the slow down. Direct access at the server
itself (not from a workstation) is slow. If I pull up task manager it takes
about 1 minute to even come up yet memory and CPU utilization rarely exceed
25%. It has 2 GIG of memory of which it only uses about 512mb. The items
essentially look the same in task manager when there is no slowdown to task
manager doesn't help me detect any runaway programs. The only thing I have
is that the defrag coincidentally occurs about the same time as the slow
down.

Hi
Both Windows 2000 Server-based and Windows Server 2003-based domain
controllers perform online defragmentation automatically. The ESE invokes
online defragmentation after each garbage collection, which occurs every 12
hours by default.
Manual online defragmentation
On domain controllers running Windows Server 2003, you can prompt online
defragmentation to run manually. Although online defragmentation occurs
automatically following garbage collection and the garbage collection
interval is known and configurable, the duration of the garbage collection
process is variable, depending on how many tombstones have expired and the
load requirements of the domain controller at the time of garbage
collection. The variable nature of garbage collection can cause
unpredictable performance between the time garbage collection begins and
online defragmentation completes.
By performing online defragmentation during off-peak hours, you can ensure
more-even directory performance during peak hours. To control when online
defragmentation occurs, you can configure domain controllers running Windows
Server 2003 as follows:
To start online defragmentation manually at any time, irrespective of
garbage collection intervals, you can add the operational attribute
doOnlineDefrag to the rootDSE object. The value of this attribute dictates
the duration (in seconds) for which online defragmentation runs. After
setting this attribute value, you can create a script that takes the
duration as input so that online defragmentation can be triggered by the
script at any time for any duration of runtime.
If you want online defragmentation to always occur only on demand, you can
configure the registry so that automatic online defragmentation is disabled.
You do not have to disable automatic online defragmentation to manually
start online defragmentation. After you add the doOnlineDefrag attribute,
you can start manual online defragmentation at any time that conditions
warrant it, while allowing automatic online defragmentation to continue as
well.

God point about the /3GB switch. I'm also wondering what sort of clients. If
legacy clients, possibly an SMB signing issue is occuring too.

I am not using the /3GB switch but as I've said I don't know if I've seen it
ever exceed much beyond 512mb of actual useage.
I am running all Windows XP SP2 clients and mac osx 10.3 clients.
