Hello. I have a couple of offices that are each their own domain using
server 2003. We recently opened up a new office, created a domain under
the main forest as was done in the past for the exising branch offices.
For whatever reason replication would not occur between this DC and
other dc's in the existing domains, no matter what we tried. Eventially
we dcpromo'd the server, created a new domain. The existing domain was
called "Wilmington". The new domain we created was called
"wilmingtonnc". We were able to get this dc and ad to replicate and
connect properly with the other domains. The problem i am having is
that on all of the other domains, under network browsing I cannot see
"wilmingtonnc", only the non-existent "wilmington" domain. I can map
share or browse to the "wilmingtonnc" domain only by using the fully
qualified name. On the wilmingtonnc side- i see both the wilmingtonnc
and the wilmington domains browsing the network. In addition, doing a
search in the registry on the dc for wilmingtonnc- i found an entry for
wilmington.local.sch under
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\ads\providers\ldap\... pointing
to the main sitd dc. there are also some other references to the
wilmington domain. How do I go about clearing this up? thanks.

If you are using WINS and when you disolved Wilmington but didn't clear the
WINS entries, the browser service may still be grabbing that info from WINS.

You know, I didn't ask HOW you installed the new domain. I'm going on your
NetBIOS name, hence my previous response.

Is the new domain called:
wilmingtonnc.local.sch

and the old one was:
wilmington.local.sch?

THen it would appear to be a new tree in your existing forest or a
completely separated new domain in a new forest?

Or is the new domain a child domain?

Since you say you still see it in the Schema, and that you got it
replicating to the other DCs, it tells me it's a new domain and since you
couldn't properly demote the old DCs out of the old domain (hopefully the
new domain is not a child domain), then you can simply remove the old domain
name's metadata from the AD database:

Clean up server metadata Active Directory 2003:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/library/Operations/012793ee-5e8c-4a5c-9f66-4a486a7114fd.mspx

If the new domain is a child domain, forget it.

DO NOT FORGET to transfer the FSMO roles and GC service to the new DC
*FIRST*.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b324801

You may also be experiencing some issues finding data in other domains in
the same forest because of the non-availibility of the IM or the IM is on a
GC. If more than one domain, the IM and GC need to be separated. How many
DCs in the new wilmingtonnc.local.sch domain? I don't think this is a big
deal, and you should be able to see references from both domains, but just
in case you have trouble and if you have more than one DC, you may want to
ensure the IM is on a separate machine than the GC is on.
