|
|
I have a question about using Virtual Server to run multiple domain
controllers from different domains. We have a main site contains the root
domain of our forrest and then we have multiple child domains at other sites
with fairly slow network links between most of the sites. All the child
domains currently replicate to the root domain.
What I would like to do is to create a virtual server that contains a domain
controller for each of the child domains on it so that we improve the
authentication speed for users at the main site. I want to use virtual server
as I do not want to support an many extra servers. There are hardly any users
of the child domains on my main site just the admins and a few visiting
people so the domain controllers will not be highly used.
Would this situation work and would this improve the authetication speeds of
the users at my main site?
If this would work I would also like to use it as a way to centralise and
provide additional AD backups as well.
Want do you think?

It can definatly make the authenication speed faster. However, you have to
consider the design of the domain. You have to create GC in this DC and you
may want to make this a child domain to increase speeds.
Although using Virtual Server should be a good solution to maintain only one
hardware for all OS, we need to consider the speed of this machines and lots
of issue as well.
For backup, you need to backup system states is enough.
