I have 1 lone NT server on my network, a BDC. My question is can I switch to
Native mode without demoting this server to a standalone server ?

No, you can't. Before switching to Native Mode you have to demote the NT4
BDC(s); you can use Windows NT4 servers in a Native-Mode Windows 2000 domain
but they cannot be domain controllers. See also:

Thanks Carlo
I had already read this which is partly why I asked my question.
It simply seems to say that in Native mode a BDC will no longer receive
updates.
However I accept that the best thing is to either demote or remove the NT box.
Does anyone know if the BDC can be demoted with an MS tool or do I have to
get a third party tool like UPromote ?

Quote from a Microsoft article:
----------------
After the successful upgrade of the PDC, you should upgrade, replace or
decommission the remaining BDCs. A defining characteristic for upgrade order
may be the applications running on the BDCs and their compatibility with the
Windows Server 2003 operating system; otherwise you can upgrade BDCs in any
order. An option for incompatible applications on Windows NT 4.0 BDCs is to
move the applications to a Windows NT 4.0 member server while the
compatibility issues for the application are solved. The location of the BDC,
if remote, could also influence the timing of the upgrade, replacement, or
decommission.
---------------------
You cannot demote a NT4 BDC, unless you want to use UPromote
http://www.pnltools.com/UPromote.asp (I don't know if the trial version will
work in this case). If it doesn't host critical applications you can nuke and
reinstall it, otherwise you can keep it (keeping the domain in mixed mode)
until you can move and uninstall the applications.
