|
|
I have a remote site with about 20 machines and one Domain Controller that is
usually connected to the main campus via VPN.
Unfortunately, that site has lost it's Internet connection. It will be more
than a month before internet access is restored.
Currently, the users on that site are still able to access their files
because the server is right there on site. The Domain Controller is also a
Global Catalog so they seem to be able to login okay.
What should i expect when I attempt (in about 6 weeks) to reconnect the
stranded domain controller back to the network via VPN... will it be able to
syncronize with the other controllers successfully, or will there be problems
that I should anticipate.

although NOT recommended, DCs "can" be disconnected from other DCs for NOT
LONGER THAN the tombstone lifetime! After that period problems called
lingering objects will/might give killing headches.
The tombstone lifetime is:
60 days for a W2K/W2K3 forest (including any upgrades to W2K3 SP1)
180 days for W2K/W2K3 forest where the FIRST DC in the forest to be promoted
was W2K3 SP1.
