Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services/Office XP
Issue:
We have a GPO set up to hide and deny access to the C drive for users
logging onto the server. Office XP is installed on the server. When users
open Word and/or other office programs and opens File --> Open, in the window
that comes up on the left side there are the options: Recent documents,
desktop, favorites, my computer, my documents, my network places. With the
policy in place, some of these options do not work because they are pointing
to a location on the C drive. When they access desktop, My Recent Documents
and My Favorites they get the error “Unable to complete the operation due to
restrictions in effect on this computer."
I totally understand how and why this works this way. The policy simply does
not allow these users to browse the C drive.
I am looking for validation that there is no solution for this. I have a
client that wants it to work but also does not want users to browse the C
drive for obvious security reasons. Is there any workaround so the users can
use these options? (eg., How about redirecting the locked down options to the
user's home directory/profile on H, etc.) We do not want to make the C drive
available for browsing, etc.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Off the top of my head you could redirect Desktop, Start Menu and My Docs to
a network location using a GPO...
or..
Create another partition on the TS and then change the location of the user
profiles so it no longer falls under C
