Hi

We have a Windows 2003 Active Directory, 3 domain controllers, each at
SP1 (no Windows 200 servers at all).

I have a Windows 2003 RC2 server at a remote site, connected via VPN.
It's joined to the domain but I'm having trouble promoting it to a
domain controller.

With dcpromo, after 'Stopping service NETLOGON', I recieve the
following message:

The operation failed because: The Active Directory Installation Wizard
cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing
Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep command-line tool to prepare both
the forest and the domain. For more information, see the help etc.

"The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not
compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer".

Dcdiag/netdiag/replmon are showing no AD issues.

Am I missing anything here? I wasn't aware, nor can I find any info
anywhere, that RC2 is that fundamentally different..

Cheers, James

Yes you need to run the ADPREP on CD2 of the Windows Server 2003 R2 set. The
AD schema has changed. The ADPREP needs to be run on the operations master.

1.) ADPREP /forestPrep (on schema role master)
2.) ADPREP /domainPrep (on infrastructure role master)
3.) ADPREP /domainprep /gpprep (on infrastructure role master)

Thanks for the reply - strange there's nothing very 'searchable' on the
subject at support.microsoft.com!

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917385

Note I found this with the following Google search string

"The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not"
site:microsoft.com
