to save AD/SYSVOL you AT LEAST need the system state.
It it best to do a FULL BACKUP

Best backup is to have a 2nd DC running. System State is a minimum. Even
with a full backup you are looking at a non-trivial effort with no
guarantee of success and a non-functioning domain until you get it back
up and running.

With a 2nd DC set up with DNS and as a GC, you have a working domain
until you can get everything fixed.....

The best backup that you could have is:
what Jorge mentioned and Hank

At east 2 Dc per Domain and/or site.
A Good and full Backup Plan

System State is necessary but not sufficient. For a complete list of what
folders need to be backed up for Active Directory see

to be able to restore AD you at least need the SYSTEM STATE, at least
according to Microsoft.

So why do YOU think that is not enough?

I would do a full backup including the system state. Just beware you lose
your dc then you will be able to logon locally with cached credentials but
you won't be able to gain access to things such as Exchange, SQL Server,
etc...

I would find an old server and bring up a second dc, they don't have high
demands and it could save your job.

My thoughts exactly. For quite a while, our second DC was on old PII
workstation with 384MB of RAM...... You *DON"T* want to have to deal
with a crashed single DC... Neither will you customers, manager, his/her
manager, the CIO, COO, CEO...... well, you get the message....

Either set up a second DC or keep your resume up to date....
