Hi,
How can I find out the version of the printer driver my XP system is using?
Printers aren't listed in Device Manager, only under 'Printers and Faxes', but
if I right click there to get 'Properties' I get no information about the
resources/drivers, as I would with other hardware items. If I go to the Hewlett
Packard website it tells me the date for the newest driver, but do I already
have it?
It's the second HP printer I've installed, so I can't just look for HP drivers
on my system and check their dates, as they may not have been uninstalled from
the other printer. The HP utility that came with the machine is silent on the
issue.
'WinMSD' is also pretty cagey about the information it gives out. What is this?
A conspiracy? ;)
The printer works fine; I'm just farting about preparing for the OS exam. I can
'Rollback Driver' for other hardware, but not for printers? Nor even 'Update
Driver'?

If you print a test page, the test page for HP printers includes the
driver version.

I find it odd that Windows XP itself doesn't display the information anywhere.
Or at least nowhere I can find. 'New Driver' just launches the 'Add Printer
Driver' wizard. Sometimes it just 'holds your hand' too much. |

For some printers there are. My HP Deskjet5550, which is an older printer
has it, but it gives no information at all. However, my HP Laserjet 1012
gives me all the driver information, in fact it has an "About This Driver"
tab.

Yes, my lazy response at fault... Windows installed a default printer for the
hp series, that has an 'about' tab, that says nothing. Installing the drivers
from the HP cd produced the specific printer model, which is missing an 'about'
tab. Go figure >:-((

The Laserjet driver is a relatively new one from HP (one year old). Not a
Windows default driver at all. It has the "About This Driver" tab that
tells me revision, etc. about the driver. Tells me the copyright date and
even shows the HP Logo. However, the Deskjet5550 is also an HP driver, not
a Windows default driver and it tells me nothing on the about tab. Just
gives a Note about changing the default settings.
My OS exam is August 15. I'm fairly confident that I'll do ok on it. It's
hard to know what to make an effort to remember. I was surprised at my
hardware test because a lot of things I memorized were never even asked.

You were on the right track, its under printers and faxes. Tell the
system to print out a test page and you will see your version number.
When in doubt simply reinstall the driver. |
