I take my OS Exam next week. Can anyone give me pointers on what exactly
to study? Should I know the keyboard shorcuts, ie Ctrl-ESC brings up Start
Menu, etc.? I think I can squeak through all the various ways of accessing
Control Panel Applets in the various OSes, but how much more should I be
concerned with? I have the Mike Meyers All-in-One book plus practice
questions. I've also taken the online practice questions at
http://www.passitnow.com/comptia.html and I've gotten some info from
http://www.tomax7.com/aplus/index.htm. Any other suggestions? Much
appreciated. Hopefully next week, I'll be certified!

I can't give you any pointers, my A+ is from 1998, but I do wish you all the
best.

Thanks, Richard. I'm more nervous about this one than I was about the
hardware because I've heard this one is much harder.

I read some of your previous posts, especially one about using a "virtual
PC" to train.
I know MS has this program, is this the one you used?
So what, I have to buy V PC and then the OS'es that I want to run?

Yes, I believe it's the program that MS has.
No, you don't have to buy them. I just used them since they were given to
me when I took my class. And, no you don't need to take a class either.
I've heard others in the A+ forum mention that it's easier to learn if you
can do the different navigation around the OSes rather than just reading
about it. Another person suggested a flashcard system to help memorize all
the different OS utility locations, etc.
I'm just wondering if the test covers everything such as the different
keyboard shortcuts and how much covers NT and 98SE, if at all. It's hard
to know what to emphasize in your studies, and there's so much to memorize.
With my 54 year-old brain, my memory's not all that good these days.
<sigh>

Oh, yeah, I saw someone else mention TestOut. I though their cd was very
good for the hardware, although I think I got my hands on a slightly older
one which was much more extensive and complete than the newer version they
gave us in my class. I think that it helped greatly with the hardware, but
I never got the OS version of it and now, I wish I had.

Don't Panic Patty!!
It's harder, but not THAT much harder, and you did really well on the hardware
exam.
If you've been following different routes to Control Panel functions, admin,
user, hard drive set-ups etc. with 98/2k/xp then you've been doing the right
thing. Installation: which parts are textual and which GUI. Printer settings.
Study dual booting, including NT and upgrade paths (when to use winnt.exe, when
winnt32.exe and their most commonly used switches)
Keyboard shortcuts: to Task Manager! ;-)
I posted about the questions that I found the hardest; and some of those were
from the beta section that don't count, so don't let my moanings worry you.
You'll do fine. |

Fred, did you ever find out how to "access Event Viewer on a remote
computer"? I've tried doing that on my system at home, but my other XP
computer won't give me access. Perhaps that's something that you can only
do in a domain rather than a peer-to-peer network? I've tried adding a
snap-in in MMC (which allows you to search for a remote computer for some
of them), but I just can't get the other one to give me access. I've tried
adding myself as an Administrator on the other computer, but that doesn't
work either. I haven't figured out how to set any persmissions for things
like Event Viewer either. Ok, I'm not really losing any sleep over this,
but I'm just curious. I thought it would be cool if I could manage some of
the same tasks on my simple network from one computer.
I've been studying and studying. I'll be so glad when it's finally over.
Thanks for the encouragement. I'm sure I'll pass, but you know, I've heard
of a number of people not passing and I wonder what exactly they did to
prepare that it wasn't enough?

Maybe, but I think people who use that site should inform the admin/web
master of those errors. Like me for instance, I already use teleport
pro to pull the whole site down without even browsing deeper than the
home page. |

No, it works on peer-to-peer. From command line run 'mmc',
then File -> Add/Remove Snap-in
then 'Add...' Choose 'Event Viewer' 'Add'
then 'Another Computer' and 'Browse' to your remote computer

Sounds like you're following the same steps. When you 'Browse' and check the
name, do you get the other computer coming up okay? I have admin privileges on
both computers. Don't know what else to suggest; I just pressed the buttons and
it worked.

Probably relied too much on crap like 'TestKing'; or others like it that have
out of date and often wrong answers! ;-)
Oh yeah; in my previous list, I forgot to add: Recovery Console - installation
and use.
Good Luck! |

Good luck Patty, but I also have no pointers because I took my exams in
2002, so it was one of the "older" exams. I will say though that I did
much better on my OS exam than I did on my Core/Hardware exam.

My systems won't allow me access when I tried that. I even added myself as
an administrator on that computer (much like I had to do when I was playing
with my network and a Win2000 computer) and it still wouldn't allow me
access. I couldn't figure out any way to give me permissions to see Event
Viewer on the remote system either. Nothing worked. I'd just get a
message that I wasn't allowed access. <sigh>

Yes. I could see the computer (I had to do a search for it) but it showed
up. But, it just wouldn't give me access no matter what I tried.

I've been depending soley on Mike Meyer's AIO for the OS. I had access to
TestOut for hardware, but not for software.
Well, tomorrow's it. I'll sure be glad to get it over with.
