Greetings,

While simular, there are many improvements to Windows 2003 (especially R2)
over 2000. To read about some of them try visiting some of these sites:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/overview/technologies/activedirectory.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/whyupgrade/top10w2k.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/upgrading/w2k/comparison.mspx

Hope this helps,

Hello,

Windows exist in two Big family :
-XP for Workstation, end user
-Server, for holding infrastructure services (AD/ DHCP / DNS / IAS...)

Radius is an infrastructure service, so this feature is in the Server
family. You can read an introduction here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb429524.aspx

Server family is an operating system, that's "looks like" XP, but has much
more feature, and less restrictions, optimized for performance. The license
is much more expensive than a simple XP. This family is intended to run on a
different hardware, a server hardware. If you go on computer manufacturer,
you will see that you have to choose between Workstation and Server type of
products.

Appologises if this comes across as dump question....

I am trying to learn and use a Radius server using my PC which is
running Windows XP.

I can't find any free downloads of a Radius server which are simple
and easy to use and that run on Windows XP.

The Internet Authentication Service (IAS) is available with Windows
Server 2003.

Whilst I understand that "Windows Server 2003" is an operating
system ...

what is it's purpose ?

how does it differ from Windows XP?

what platform does this run ?

would I be able to run "Windows Server 2003" on my pc ?

Thank you for your help.

Pete
