|
|
Hello: All:
I just built a new PC, & I want to migrate my old email, &
addresse from several programs that I have used. I have used Outlook,
Outlook Express & Thunderbird. I have hooked up the old Hard Drive,
and what I need to know, is where do I find the old email on the hard
drive? In what folders would I be looking in and how how do I import
them?
Thanks in advance,
Mike |

The easiest case is for Outlook, and it's one of the reasons I like
Outlook. EVERYTHING (not only E-Mail but calendar also) is in one
single file, the ".PST" file (you can have more than one PST file if you
want to, although by default you won't). The location varies but a
search of the drive should find them. and the PST file can be easily
copied from drive to drive or computer to computer, it's just a normal file.
Outlook Express is more complex, there is a set of files per folder (if
you have hundreds or thousands of folders, well .......), but they are
located together. Sometimes it's best to use the export / import
feature to move mail from one system or drive to another.

What about the file & transfer settings wizard, assuming the new pc is
running xp?

FSTW won't transfer the thunderbird files unless you know where the
files are and tell it (in fact, it won't transfer the outlook files
either unless you tell it to do so, although I think it "knows about"
Outlook express). Point is, if you know where the files are, it's just
about as easy to move the files yourself. I find the files and settings
transfer wizzard more useful for settings than for data files, which I
usually just transfer manually.
