Hey all. Am new to the group and am in search of some advice. Am 34
years young and have been a "user" of computers since I got my first
Apple II+ in '82. (Yes kids, I saw Korn, Manson, and Zombie before they
were anything special.) Never really blossomed into any heavy tech due
to the only computer course in my area college at the time being DOS.
Anyway, I'm not "super geek" and can't tell you the difference between
the architecture of one chip vs the next, but I know ("feel") my way
around fairly well. Was recently laid off from a government position
and have BA in Soc/Philo. Now I have returned to college to work on
an AA in Networking/ Repair/Programming (The courses are pretty
eclectic) and am wondering if perhaps I am spinning my wheels? My
problem isn't tests or anything such as that as I can remember info
long enough to ace any exam. It is just that I feel like over time I
am forgetting more than I'm learning such as the specifics of IPSEC,
RAS, or which RAID is which etc. Perhaps one just needs time in the
industry in order to internalize some of these concepts and make them
seem more concrete. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced what
I'm describing and if it seems to ebb with experience. Is there even
room for a "new tech" at 34? I do seem to be somewhat advantaged as
many of the younger students don't know their way
around the CLI, but I am far from being an expert and it seems as
though every ad I read is looking for someone with 1700 years
experience and 32 certs. I could probably pass an A+ test if I studied
hard enough, but that really doesn't equate to having a knowledge of
the topic. I have friends who say you don't need to know a lot; just
get busy working and gain some experience. Others obviously believe the
opposite. Opinions anyone? |
