|
|
This is the latest in the continuing saga of my client's PC whose HDD
died.
I now have the HDD and have installed it and restored Windows 98.
However, there are NO driver disks. I could find no driver disks for
the system components, no version of Windows or Linux (I tried
installing several OS's just for detection purposes) can identify the
devices in the system, and there are no labels or other Make/Model ID on
the physical devices themselves.
Here's what I know about the system at this point:
Mobo: Tyan Trinity KT-A V1.08c
BIOS: Award 6.00
CPU: Athlon 950 MHz
HDD: Maxtor 30 GB (replaced by myself)
Video Card: Unknown
Sound Card: Unknown
Modem Card: Unknown
So where to go from here? I'm wondering if offering her a trade-in is
the best solution -- I have an old system I can offer her -- Old, but it
has really all a Word-and-E-mail user needs -- And I have all the
drivers for it!
Any thoughts?

Look closely at the devices for any numbers or letters. I have never
come across a card that did not have any numbers on them. Once you
find the numbers, start searching on Yahoo or Google. Sometimes even
using the numbers from one of the chips on the card will help.

I've had many times where I had to install a driver for a device. I've
looked at any labels on the card and even got numbers off chips on the
card. Usually with a video card, the video chip is labeled with a number.
Seach google for it and you can probably find a driver for it. Same with
modems.

So will Everest and SysInfo. I think Belarc will too.

Install Aida32. Will give a very detailed list of about anything you
would want to know about the system.

This is not uncommon at all. Is this a PC from a major manufacturer
(HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, etc.), or a generic box that somebody built
themselves? If it's the former, you should be able to type in the PC
model # on the manufacturer's website and get somewhere. If the latter,
download belarc advisor and google for the correct driver. |
