I have 2 pcs at home, I installed server 2003 on pc1 with IP address:
192.168.0.5, the domain name is aero.com and windows xp on pc2 with ip
address: 192.168.0.7, I used a d-link router to link them together.
my questions are: 1.when I tried to ping the pc each other, why it doesn't
work?
2. I tried to join pc2 to the domain aero.com,
it showed me " can't find the domain"
my understanding is they are on the same network, should be able to ping
each other, can anyone please help me out, thank you very much in advance.

Hi iTek,

Are you trying to ping IP Address or domain name? Without waiting for an
answer I would counsel you to look at your DNS settings because it is the
easiest thing to fix and the most common cause of problems. If you are
pinging IP Address without luck then it is not DNS.

Once you can ping IP address try joining the domain using the NetBios name
rather than the FQDN.

Good luck!

M

Yes, I have authorized DHCP. The pc1 is configured as 192.168.0.5,
255.255.255.0 gateway:192.168.0.1; The pc2 is 192.168.0.7, 255.255.255.0, the
gateway:192.168.0.1. I used a d-link 4-port router to link pc1 and pc2. When
I set them in a workgroup, they can ping each other with no problem at all.
However when I set pc1 as a domain controller itek.com, then they both can
ping 192.168.0.1, but can not ping each other, and pc2 can not join the
domain itek.com. really strange. Please help, thank you very much!

Wait one minute... Did you install active directory on your server??? If you
installed AD on your domain, and then have the server doing DHCP, then you
have to authorize DHCP on the domain.

I think Network Load Balancing (NLB) is enable on the nic adaptor, try to
disable it.
