I was wondering if anyone has had a tough time finding a job in the
computer field. I know that no one will give you a job. I have my a+
certification, I also have an associates in science from a comunity
college. I had my ccna but it expired and I had not had the time to
take the test again because I am working full time and finishing up my
bachelors degree. I also have an mcp in windows 2000. I have plenty
of experince networking and fixing computer with windows and linux. I
also have a techinal school certifacate. I also have a network cabling
certification that no one cares about it is the ctech lucent for copper
and fiber optic. Why is it so difficult to find a job in this field.
My greatest fear is I will have my bachelors degree in business
management and no one will seem to care. After I get my degree I am
going to recertify with cisco and take the ccnp routing exam. I want
to take the network plus, security plus, server plus, and linux plus.
I would like to obtain my mcsa certification. At my last job
interview for a help desk for a company that supports an insurance
billing software product they said would you work for $8.00 an hour.
I told the interviewer thank you have a nice day and walked out. |

Wow! I just turned down a job today that paid $55,000 per year. It's
not enough! I'm willing to take slightly less then what I am making
now, but $55,000, they have got to be kidding me!
Was the $8 per hour job part time? :)
Heck, for 2 months I was making more a week on unemployment 4 years
ago then that $8 per hour job.
I was talking to a recruiter yesterday and she said that employers are
now looking for MCSA and MCSE certifications.
As soon as I pass the Linux+ exam, I am going to start studying for
the MCSA exam. Linux+ exam in 15 days and counting. Fingers crossed
and rabbit foot hanging from my ear, I hope I pass.

Don't come to San Antonio, TX for a technicial job. I've lived her all
my life and I don't want to leave my home town, I get too home sick.
But this town sucks when comes to finding any high-tech jobs. I have a
BS degree in electrical engineering and could never find a good job
here in town. Since I had no job experience when I graduated from
college no one here wants to train a new graduate. All the engineering
jobs here want only experienced people. So I went into business with
computer recycling company. I only get paid $9.00 an hour for computer
tech work. That is about average what a tech makes here in SA, TX. I
really want to become a teacher and train people on how to repair
computer system. But I first need to get all my cerifications and
teacher cerifications.
Mister, I don't know why you said $55,000 is too low. My fellow
college graduates who moved out of town don't even make that much and
they are working has engineers? Where do you live and what job did you
have before?
Finding tech jobs is getting harder and harder, because all jobs are
now going to other countries for cheap labor!

In Michigan ALL jobs suck. I would certainly be happy to take a $55,000 a
year job to start, so would my daugther who has her degree in Computer
Science and has been working in the IT department of a company for 3 years
and is still not making that much.

I live near Philadelphia, PA. I am currently making alot more then
that now at my day job and taking $55,000 would be a pay cut. I
charge $60 an hour in the Philadelphia area to repair computers on my
after hours jobs and I have been told that is cheap. As soon as I get
the rest of the certs I am going to take the exams for, I will not
have a problem getting the salary I want. I have the 15 years
experience, but I don't have the credentials to back it up. Soon I
will have both.
I do have an Associates in Electronics Technology and A+ (February
2006), Network+ (March 2006) and Security+ (April 2006)
certifications.
I took the summer off and in 14 days, I hope to pass the Linux+ exam.
I then will start the MCSA exams and hopefully will have that
certification by the first quarter on next year.
The title I currently have at my job is Director of Technology,
however I am looking for a Network/System Administrator or
Network/System Engineer position. I need something with more hands
on, as I feel my brain is turning into mush right now.
It did take me 17 years to get the salary I have.

Yes! I currently make $40000/year here in Wisconsin as a PC Tech. I
was making $43000/year at my last job, but the company got taken over
and I couldn't stand to work there anymore (I'm going to need to you
come in on Saturday...where are those TPS reports?). The company I
work at now recently just got taken over as well. Crap!
I've been looking for another job for the past year and the hits are
very few indeed. One company that contacted me wanted me to pick 3
days in which to do a phone interview. 3 separate phone interviews!
Of course, the company is 2 hours from where I live, so that means I
need at least 4 days to interview for one position. No thanks.
Tough market, indeed.

To the OP: What was the job description, and in what part of the country do
you live? What cert's / experience do you have?
Since this group is a.c.a+, I assume posters are talking about repair / tech
type jobs. If that's the case for you, this sounds like a lot.

Hmm... for a few years, I was hearing that those cert's weren't worth much.
Has this changed (again)?

That's what I'm doing.
I'd be interested in hearing the experiences of other who have gone that
route. How much do you charge, what kinds of services do you offer, what
liability insurance do you carry, what is the organization, i.e., sole
proprietor, LLC, etc.?

How much do you charge,
$45 per hour, a job "caps" @ 4 hrs. per box/situation; i.e., if I spend 5
hrs. working/delivering/setting up, customer pays no more than $180 (not
including, of course, hardware and uncommonly un-forseen circumstances).
People like to know what the worst-case-scenario is going to be, and for me,
$180 for less than a day's worth of work ain't bad.
what kinds of services do you offer
My card says "PC/Printer Repair/ Installation, Virus/Spyware Removal,
Instruction, Small Business Solutions" Really, there's not much that I've
been asked to do that I didn't know about, or were able to quickly find out
about. I call myself a consultant, and I will spend a lot of time
interviewing the customer, and spelling out possible options.

None, though I'm looking into Error and Omissions Insurance. I'd like to
know what other self-employed techs do about this
what is the organization, i.e., sole proprietor, LLC, etc.?
Sole Proprietor. After about a year and a half, I've got a good amount of
return business and word-of mouth-business, and it appears to be getting
better only, from here on.

You're charging WAY too low. For private individuals it's $60/hour or
any portion thereof. For corporate it's $80-85. If you want to be "nice"
you can give a 90-day warranty for the same problem. If it's a
different problem, no warranty

I was a PC Service Specialist with IBM for over 40 years and i didn't
make that kind of money. I guess you want to start at the top and work
down. BTW.. just what do you do that makes worth $55,000+?

Director of Technology = Executive Position
Pencil pushers seem to make more money then people who actually do
something. I on the other hand like to do something. I guess I am
not executive material and therefore need to find another job before I
end up in a padded room.
I also know how big companies refer to their employees as numbers and
under pay them. I worked for a very large company and was way under
paid. They tried to give me a 2% raise one year. I told them the
company must need it more then I do if that is all they can afford and
I refused the raise. Three hours later the manager called me to
inform me they made a mistake, I was to get 12%, not 2%. Ahh, yeah,
some mistake.
Anyway, small to medium size companies are for me.
I would have liked to answer your question by saying I'm a male escort
that, but know one would have believed that, including myself.
