First of all, MCSD is five exams. not one:
1) 70-300
2) 70-305 or 315
3) 70-306 or 316
4) 70-310 or 320
5) an elective exam

The fact that you did not seem to know this makes me wonder how committed
you are in getting your MCSD.

See http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcsd/requirementsdotnet.mspx

I would recommend starting with whatever you do most.
For example, if you do XML programming on VB.Net,
start off with exam 70-310.
Web development in C#? Then start with 70-315.
Work with .NET Framework 2.0 only? Then skip MCSD and try to earn your MCPD.
That's only three exams, not five.

Read the exam's preparation guide (available through above link).
Write down each item on a separate page, and make notes about each topic.
Occasionally you will come upon exam questions where one choice is listed as
a "skills being measured" and the others are not. Just writing down the
topics is a good beginning to studying for the exam.

Next, practice, practice, practice. Develop programs related to the "skills
being measured." For example, you can study "Create interfaces visible to
COM" by creating an interface visible to COM. Use the product! Especially
learn how to use the help system. (For example, type the word "interface" in
a module, then press F1 with the cursor on the word Interface, and you will
be on your way to answering the above topic.)

You can also go to msdn.microsoft.com and study the material online. Now
that .NET Framework 2.0 is out, be careful that what you study is not .NET
Framework 2.0 only, as the MCSD exams are just on .NET Framework 1.x.
Remember that the exams themselves were written before the books, and the
exam creators only had what was in MSDN and TechNet to develop their
questions by. It's always good to study what the test creators studied.

Download the 101 sample programs that Microsoft offers on their download page.
Study especially the ones related to the "skills being measured" on the
exam(s) you are currently studying for. Remember that you are not tested on
the best way of doing things - you are being tested on what Microsoft thinks
is the best way. These sample programs are what Microsoft thinks is best.

I agree with Cerebus that you should buy at least one book on the exam.
Take it with you when you go to the bathroom and you will have free study
time!
If you cannot afford the books, ask your public library to get them for you.
Most libraries in the US have a lending system to get books they don't have.
I once used an exam book from a Florida library (I'm in Kentucky).
If your country does not have such as system, recommend that they start one.
If you are smart enough to post in a newsgroup, you should be smart enough
to write to your country's officials to start such a system.

Finally, if you don't have a library nearby, go to a bookstore.
Grab a book and read it there! Just be careful not to damage it in any way.
Write notes on the pages I told you to create earlier for each topic.
If more than one book talks about the same topic, chances are it will be on
the exam.
Bring a clipboard or something so the words you write aren't imprinted on
the book.
Every once in a while buy something so that they won't eventually chase you
out!
I can make the coffee at the Barnes and Nobles last for hours!

If your city has a used book store, look there for books. I have a 70-298
security book that I got at Half-Price books for $1.00. I don't plan on
taking that exam, but if I ever have a job that requires that information,
I'm ready.

There are ways of studying for the exams cheaply without cheating.
Someday I may even write a book called "the Cheapskates guide to earning a
Certification."

The URL for 101 .Net code samples is:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=08e3d5f8-033d-420b-a3b1-3074505c03f3&displaylang=en

You can choose to download the samples in C# or VB from there. The samples
are decent enough to get an overview of each area of .Net development (but no
more)

Graham, do you know the URL to download the VS 2005 version of these
sample programs. I can't seem to find it.
