I just purchased 250 Windows Server 2003 CAL Licenses and need to install
them on one of my Domain Controllers.

What is the best practice for this?

rjones,

Most people disable the Licensing service as it causes more trouble than it
is worth. I don't even think it runs by default on Server 2003. The main
exception is if you are running terminal services, then you ahve to have it
installed on the TS License server.

rjones,

If you do a search on the License Logging Service (LLS) you'll find articles
on a lot of errors with the resolution being to disable the service. I would
suggest that you keep your licenses on file and monitor the servers
periodically for compliance.

It looks like you are in per seat/ per device, so this should be fairly easy
to audit. In general this service is just too inconsistent to really use in
a large production environment.

If you are looking to allocate licenses, you'd want to set up license pools
to allocate them. This helps you group and maintain licenses. But, as I said,
unless you are running Terminal Services in application mode, let it go, but
audit.

One of my DC is running the License service, I went to Admin tools licensing
and added the 250 CALs to the purchase history page, what was happening is
once a week when I check the CALs would not be listed and I have to add them
again.
Also, is it required that I create a group and added a CAL to every user
accound in the domain?
