|
|
I'm looking to get some certifications for work. It would be a geek
squad type position. Going to people's home setting up their home
networks, printers, wifi ect. I found a school ,Tech Skills, that
helps you to get CompTia certs. I'm not all that familiar w/
comptia.
I'd say i'm a pretty advanced user. I was recommed to take the A+,
Network + and Security +. How do these hold up to comprable Microsoft
Certs? And what are the comprable Microsoft Certs?
Thanks,

THERE ARE NO COMPARABLE MS CERTS.
These are different than the MS certs, which are more difficult and
generally more respected ***IF*** you are applying for an IT position.
BUT, for what you described, A+ and Network+ are probably more
appropriate. You don't need Security+, and frankly you can probably do
A+ and Net+ on your own without attending a school (and, more to the
point, without paying tuition).

There are MS certs that are sort of comparable and equally relevant. For XP
it's called MCDST for certified desktop technician. You need to take two
tests at a cost of 125 each, _usually discountable to 100-110 by buying a
voucher. Unfortunately to get the equivalent cert in Vista (with rather
ridiculous new names), you have to take two more tests, same price. They
do not offer a pair of tests that encompass both OSs. You can get the XP
cert then take one test in Vista to upgrade. But this may change.
And the price may change in the next 6 months or so. MSFT has changed its
testing provider setup.
I would suggest A+ and one of the MSFT certs. If you get A+ and the XP
MCDST, you will be able to upgrade your DST to the Vista Cert with one test,
and the Net + -- if it is necessary at all -- should contain only 20-25%
new material and be a breeze. Practically speaking, what you should do
(have you applied for the job yet?) is find out what certs your potential
employers will want. If you don't know, call and ask. Those certs are
the ones to get.
If you have self discipline, and can schedule yourself to study and practice
on your own, you do not need to take any classes at all.
Good luck,
Mike |
