Q: I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what to work on in order to pass the OS part of the certification. I recently took the test and got a 572 out of the 600 hundred needed to pass... Also do you think that 2-3 weeks is enough time to study or do you think more time is needed?

A: Have a look at the www.freecomptia.com exams they helped me pass the exam in 5 minutes.

Go through the practice tests at freecomptia and make sure you not only can get the right answers but that you know why the answers are right and you will do fine. There really isn't much to the exam other than knowing the material.

On my tests the questions were almost word for word from there so its a great place to look for information.

The timing really depends on you, how long do you think it will take you to cover the material you are missing in order to pass the test?

If you don't own windows 2000 then buy it. When the book you are studying from references a cetain thing in the operating system then go to that place. Make sure you memorize how you got there. What tabs are there. What items can be changed from that section. The only way to get good at the OS is to actually use the operating system. I don't recommend just studying practice tests. They are a good supplement though. Good Luck.

Start by reviewing the objectives that you missed questions in. There's a section on your score sheet that begins with :

You have missed one or more questions in the following objective areas:

Then go to http://www.comptia.com/certification/a/os_objectives.asp and review the objectives that you missed questions in. That will help you focus on the areas you need the most help in. Review your study materials a quck read through is fine, but spend more time on the problem areas you can identify from the score sheet.

One tip, it can be a daunting task trying to learn everything contained in a 600-700 page book, I suggest to just read through the entire thing again, reading more as a 'casual read' than intense study. Then go back and concentrate on the areas you identified using the exam objectives.

I was six weeks between my exams which I considered too much time for myself, but it paid off because I passed the first time around. Everyone is different. What I did was I had friends and family read the questions to me from the Mike Meyers book and I answered them as best as I could. I also practiced the questions from www.freecomptia.com and www.passitnow.com. Just remember that you have to know Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Win9x. I also had gotten a few DOS questions on my exam as well, but everyones questions are different, which you probably already knew this anyway. And like someone already mentioned, review the objectives that you missed. Good luck.

Cheers,
Kathy
